Supported Applications

The Omega SA3 Series consists of self-adhesive, fast-response surface thermocouples designed for temperature measurement on flat or curved surfaces. The series features a low-mass junction and polyimide carrier to facilitate rapid thermal response in dynamic environments.

Suitable applications include outdoor and wet environments where exposure to bright sunlight has minimal effect on performance or accuracy. The sensor construction is resistant to many chemicals and oils, supporting surface monitoring tasks requiring chemical resistance.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The SA3 Series operates within a process temperature range of -17 to 260°C (0 to 500°F) for the sensor element. The overall measurement capability is documented as -40 to 260°C (-40 to 500°F). When specified with miniature color-coded connectors, the connector operating range is limited to -29 to 180°C (-20 to 356°F).

Performance specifications include Special limits of error accuracy. The junction type utilizes an ungrounded sensor construction mounted on a polyimide tape base with silicone adhesive and paper peel sheet, covered by a polyimide tape layer.

The electrical insulation resistance is rated at 100 MΩ minimum at 100 Vdc at room temperature when the sensor is mounted to a surface. The physical dimensions of the sensing element are 25.4 mm (1.00 in) length, 9.6 mm (0.38 in) width, and 0.50 mm (0.02 in) thickness.

Configuration Options

The series is configurable across thermocouple types, lead lengths, termination styles, and color code standards to meet specific installation requirements.

  • Thermocouple Types: Available in Type J, K, T, and E. Color coding options include ANSI (J/K/T/E) or IEC (JI/KI/TI/EI).
  • Cable Lengths: Offered in 1 m (40"), 2 m (80"), and 3 m (120") lengths.
  • Termination Styles: Configurable with stripped #30AWG solid leads or a miniature color-coded connector. Connectors are constructed from glass-filled nylon when specified.
  • Cable Construction: Features PFA insulated and jacketed 30 AWG cable extending from the junction area.

The model number guide follows the format SA3-[thermocouple type]-[length code]-[termination type]. For example, SA3-E-SRTC denotes a Type E thermocouple with a miniature connector and standard length.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the SA3 Series are distinguished by their specific thermocouple element (J, K, T, or E), adherence to ANSI versus IEC color coding standards, cable length codes (-72 for 2 m/80", -120 for 3 m/120"), and termination method. Models ending in "-SRTC" include the miniature thermocouple connector option, while models without this suffix feature stripped #30AWG solid leads.

The series does not offer variations in sensor dimensions or accuracy class beyond those explicitly listed; all variants share the same polyimide carrier construction and ungrounded junction design. Selection is driven by the required temperature range compatibility with the connector (if used), preferred color code standard, and necessary lead length for routing to instrumentation.
