Supported Applications

The OM-EL-USB-TC is a self-contained thermocouple temperature data logger with a direct USB interface, built for standalone measurement and recording of temperature across an exceptionally wide range. Because it accepts Type K, Type J, and Type T thermocouples through a female subminiature thermocouple receptacle at the base of the unit, it adapts to a broad spread of monitoring tasks — from cryogenic and cold-chain environments down to -200 to 1300°C (-328 to 2372°F) with a Type K sensor, through to high-temperature process and oven monitoring.

The logger measures and stores over 32,000 temperature readings, and its user-selectable high and low alarm thresholds make it suitable for unattended surveillance where an out-of-limit excursion must be flagged. Two onboard LEDs give at-a-glance status without a PC connection: the first flashes orange to signal a problem condition such as a low battery, while the second flashes green to indicate the recorded temperature is within alarm limits.

Setup and data retrieval are handled by plugging the unit directly into a PC USB port and running the supplied Windows software. Logged data can be graphed and exported for analysis, and temperature can be viewed in °C or °F as selected in software, so the device fits routine quality, validation, and record-keeping workflows.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The data logger itself is rated for an ambient operating temperature range of -10 to 40°C (-14 to 104°F) and should not be subjected to temperatures outside this range. The wide measurement span applies to the attached thermocouple, and the range available depends on the thermocouple type selected in software:

  • Type K: -200 to 1300°C (-328 to 2372°F)
  • Type J: -130 to 900°C (-202 to 1652°F)
  • Type T: -200 to 350°C (-328 to 662°F)

Recorded temperature is presented with a resolution of 0.5°C (1°F) and a logger accuracy of ±1.0°C (±2.0°F). The logging rate is configurable in software across a wide span — from a sample every 1 sec up to a sample every 12 hr — with selectable intervals of 1 sec, 10 sec, 1 min, 5 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 6 hr, and 12 hr. Onboard memory holds 32,000 readings, and the start date and time can be programmed so logging begins automatically.

Power comes from an included ½ AA 3.6 V lithium battery rated for 6 months of operation. Stored readings are retained when the battery is flat or replaced, though the logging process stops and cannot be restarted until the battery is replaced and the data is downloaded. Leaving the unit plugged into the USB port longer than necessary draws on the battery. The supplied Windows software runs on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 10 and 11 (32-bit and 64-bit).

The product is ISO 9001 certified (Stamford, CT) and ISO 9002 certified (Manchester, UK), is RoHS compliant and CE marked, and carries a 1 year warranty.

Configuration Options

The OM-EL-USB-TC is delivered as a single logger whose measurement capability is defined by the thermocouple type it is configured to read. Selecting the thermocouple type in software reconfigures both the usable measurement range and the character of the application:

  • Type K configuration provides the widest reach, -200 to 1300°C (-328 to 2372°F), covering the broadest set of low- and high-temperature tasks.
  • Type J configuration covers -130 to 900°C (-202 to 1652°F).
  • Type T configuration covers -200 to 350°C (-328 to 662°F), suited to lower-temperature and cold-chain work.

Independent of thermocouple type, every unit shares the same core capabilities: a female subminiature thermocouple connector, direct USB set-up and download, user-programmable high and low alarms, selectable start time, dual status LEDs, and the choice of displaying temperature in °C or °F. Physically the logger measures 118.2 mm (4.65 in) in length with a 26.8 mm (1.06 in) body diameter and a 27.0 mm (1.06 in) connector diameter, and weighs 43 g (1.5 oz), so the same compact form factor serves all thermocouple types.

Key Product Differences

The series follows the model number structure OM-EL-USB-TC — Product Type — Interface — Thermocouple Type. The ordering lineup consists of the logger itself together with its supporting battery and thermocouple accessories:

  • OM-EL-USB-TC — thermocouple data logger with USB interface, supplied complete with Windows software, operator's manual on CD, protective cap, pocket clip, a Type K thermocouple, and a ½ AA 3.6 V lithium battery.
  • OM-EL-BATT — replacement 3.6 V lithium battery.

A free Type K insulated beaded-wire thermocouple with subminiature connector and wire spool caddy is included with the logger. A spare of this sensor can be ordered as SC-GG-K-30-36. An example order combines OM-EL-USB-TC, the thermocouple data logger with USB interface, with OM-EL-BATT, the replacement battery.
