Supported Applications

The Omega PS Series Pressure Snubbers are porous metallic devices designed to dampen pressure surges, spikes, waterhammers, and pulsations in fluid systems. Installed between the process line and a sensor (such as a pressure gage or transducer), they protect instrumentation from damage caused by rapid pressure fluctuations. The series is also utilized for flow restriction or bleed control applications.

Documented media compatibility includes:

  • Oils: Heavy oils ranging from 225 to 500 S.S.U. (10 to 50 SAE).
  • Liquids: Water and light oils with viscosities of 30 to 225 SSU.
  • Gases: Air, steam, and other gases.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The PS Series is constructed from high-grade stainless steel housings with porous metal discs. Pressure ratings vary by size: the 1/8" NPT (PS-8) models are rated to 5,000 PSI, while the 1/4" NPT (PS-4) and 1/2" NPT (PS-2) models support up to 10,000 PSI. For liquids, the series supports pressures up to 10,000 psi (690 bar).

Performance is defined by three porosity grades selected based on fluid viscosity and type:

  • Porosity D: Mean opening of 0.064 mm (0.0025 inch); maximum opening of 0.127 mm (0.005 inch). Capacity is 6.5 CFH at 1-psi differential pressure.
  • Porosity E: Mean opening of 0.033 mm (0.0013 inch); maximum opening of 0.064 mm (0.0025 inch). Capacity is 3.0 CFH at 1-psi differential pressure.
  • Porosity G: Mean opening of 0.010 mm (0.0004 inch); maximum opening of 0.0025 mm (0.0009 inch). Capacity is 1.1 CFH at 1-psi differential pressure.

Installation Note: Flow direction must be from the male threaded port to the female threaded port; improper flow may result in failure. Do not force tap water through the snubber as this will plug it.

Configuration Options

The series offers a configurable envelope of thread sizes, connection types, and porosity grades to match specific process requirements. The model number structure follows the format PS--.

  • Sizes: PS-8 (1/8"), PS-4 (1/4"), and PS-2 (1/2").
  • Porosity Grades: D, E, or G.
  • Thread Types:
    • NPT: Standard National Pipe Tapered threads.
    • BSPT: British Standard Pipe Tapered (suffix -M).
    • G: Metric/Parallel thread (suffix -MG).
  • Housing Material: 303 Stainless Steel or High-Grade Stainless Steel.
  • Porous Disc Material: 316 Stainless Steel or High-Grade Stainless Steel.

The series includes dry-seal type pipe threads. If a joint compound is required, solid resinous types are advised; TeflonĀ® plastic tape is suggested as the most efficient material.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the PS Series differ primarily by physical dimensions and pressure ratings associated with their thread size. The 1/8" NPT (PS-8) models have an overall length of approximately 1 13/16" (30 mm), while the larger 1/2" NPT (PS-2) models measure approximately 2 5/32" (55 mm). The PS-4 series occupies a middle dimension with an approximate overall length of 1 15/16" (37 mm).

Pressure capability is tied to the size designation: PS-8 variants are limited to 5,000 PSI ratings in catalog tables, whereas PS-2 and PS-4 variants support up to 10,000 PSI. Thread variations (-M for BSPT and -MG for G threads) maintain identical porosity performance characteristics (D, E, or G) but differ in thread pitch and hex dimensions to accommodate regional standards.
