Supported Applications
The Omega OMEGACLAD® Mineral Insulated Thermocouple Cable series provides temperature sensing elements constructed with high-purity magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation and a metal sheath. This mineral-insulated wire is used in thermocouple probes and as extension wire for industrial temperature measurement systems.
Designed to withstand vibration, high temperatures, and pressures, the cable offers durability suitable for demanding environments where standard insulated wires may fail. The construction allows the cable to be easily formed into custom shapes or welded during installation.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series is available in thermocouple calibrations Type J (Iron-Constantan), K (CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA® and OMEGA-N®), T (Copper-Copper-Constantan or Copper-Constantan), E (CHROMEGA®-Constantan), and N. Sheath diameters range from 0.010 to 0.312 inch, with wall thicknesses varying by diameter.
Electrical resistance at 60°F is specified per double foot for each gauge size; values in the specification table include 716.9 Ω/Dbl. ft. (Type E, 50 AWG), 38 Ω/Dbl. ft. (Type K/E/J/T, 38 AWG), and down to 0.22 Ω/Dbl. ft. for larger diameters such as the Type J 18 AWG equivalent.
Continuous lengths are available from a minimum of 5 feet up to thousands of feet. The cable is noted for its ability to withstand vibration, high temperatures, and pressures inherent in process environments.
Sheath Materials
- 304 Stainless Steel (standard)
- Inconel 600
- 310 Stainless Steel
- 316 Stainless Steel
- 321 Stainless Steel
- SUPER OMEGACLAD® XL
- Hastelloy-X
Diameter and Gauge Options
The series supports sheath diameters of 0.010, 0.020, 0.032, 0.040, 0.062, 0.125, 0.188, 0.250, and 0.312 inch. Corresponding wire diameters range from 0.0015 to 0.044 inch (AWG 50 down to AWG 18), with specific availability dependent on the thermocouple type and sheath material.
Configuration Options
The OMEGACLAD® series is highly configurable through a structured model number format: <Sheath Material Code>-<Wire Calibration>-MO-<Sheath Diameter>-(*).
Model Number Configuration
- Sheath Material: 304 (Stainless Steel), INC (Inconel 600). Other materials are specified by changing the code to 310, 316, 321, XL, or HASTX.
- Wire Calibration: J, K, T, E. Type N is available with Inconel sheath (change 'K' to 'N').
- Insulation Code: MO denotes Magnesium Oxide insulation.
- Diameter Codes: 010 through 375 represent hundredths of an inch (e.g., 020 = 0.020 inch).
- Suffixes: Add 'SLE' for Special Limits of Error.
Pricing and Ordering Notes
A minimum order length of 5 feet is required. For Type N, changing the model number from K to N incurs no extra charge. Changing sheath materials (e.g., 304 to 316) also carries no additional charge unless specified otherwise for SUPER OMEGACLAD® XL or Hastelloy-X, which require consultation with Sales.
Special Limits of Error ('SLE') adds a 20% price increase. Discount schedules apply based on length in feet and metric equivalents (e.g., 10% discount for lengths between 11 to 25' or 3.1 to 7.5 m).
Key Product Differences
Variants within the series differ primarily by sheath material, thermocouple type, and diameter.
- Type K vs. Type N: Both are available with Inconel 600 (INC) sheaths; model numbers for Type N replace 'K' with 'N'. CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA® is specified for standard Type K, while OMEGA-N® denotes the specific alloy composition for Type N.
- Sheath Material Differences: 304 Stainless Steel is the baseline; Inconel 600 (INC) offers higher temperature capability. Special alloys like SUPER OMEGACLAD® XL and Hastelloy-X are available by modifying the sheath code in the model number.
- Diameter Availability: Smaller diameters such as 0.010 inch are offered for Type K, E, T (with Inconel), but not all types support every diameter; for example, Type J starts at 0.020 inch in the standard listing.
- Error Limits: Standard accuracy is implied by default model numbers; adding 'SLE' provides Special Limits of Error performance with a corresponding price adjustment.
