Supported Applications

The Omega TQ501 Inline Rotary Torque Sensors are designed for measuring torques in rotating shafts. The series utilizes a strain gage bridge and an integral slip ring assembly to transfer electrical signals between the rotating sensor element and stationary electronics, making it suitable for long-term measurements where periodic brush cleaning or replacement is feasible.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The TQ501 series operates within a temperature range of -65°F to 250°F (-53 to 120°C), with a compensated temperature range of 70°F to 170°F (0 to 77°C). Thermal effects are specified as ±0.002% F.S./°F for zero and ±0.002% Rdg./°F for span. The sensors feature an accuracy of ±0.18% full scale, with linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability each rated at ±0.10% full scale.

Electrical specifications include a nominal bridge resistance of 350 Ω and a rated output of 2 mV/V. The excitation voltage is 10 Vdc with a maximum of 20 Vdc. Mechanical limits define the safe load as 150% full scale and the ultimate load as 300% full scale. Full-scale angular deflection is limited to 1.2 degrees, and the sensor supports rotational speeds up to 6000 rpm.

Configuration Options

The series offers seven measurement ranges from 0 - 100 in-lb to 0 - 10,000 in-lb. Models are constructed of nickel-plated steel and include a mating connector for electrical connection.

  • Measurement Ranges: TQ501-100 (0–100 in-lb), TQ501-200 (0–200 in-lb), TQ501-500 (0–500 in-lb), TQ501-1K (0–1,000 in-lb), TQ501-2K (0–2,000 in-lb), TQ501-5K (0–5,000 in-lb), and TQ501-10K (0–10,000 in-lb).
  • Options: An optional -RPM suffix adds an rpm speed sensor providing 60 pulses/rev.
  • Accessories: A TX4-100 accessory provides 100' of 4-con. PVC shielded wire.

The slip ring assembly consists of silver graphite brushes that rub on the rotating ring to provide an electrical path for excitation and signal voltage. Brush life is rated at 1.4 x 10⁷/rpm.

Physical dimensions vary by model range, with overall length (Dimension D) ranging from 8.50 inches to 9.50 inches and shaft diameter (Dimension A) varying between 0.750 inch for the TQ501-100 through TQ501-2K models and 1.500 inch for the TQ501-5K and TQ501-10K models.

Key dimensional differences include:

  • TQ501-100, -200, -500: Dimension A is 0.750 inch; overall length (D) is 8.50 inches.
  • TQ501-1K, -2K: Dimension A increases to 1.000 inch for the TQ501-1K and remains at 1.000 inch; overall length (D) is 9.50 inches.
  • TQ501-5K, -10K: Dimension A increases to 1.500 inch; overall length (D) is 241 mm (9.50 inches).

The series includes specific warnings regarding installation: the sensor is not designed for off-axis loading and requires proper shaft couplings. Torsional loads should not exceed 150% of rated capacity.
