Supported Applications

The OS550A Series is a fixed, non-contact infrared thermometer/transmitter for continuous industrial temperature monitoring and control. The sensing head reads the surface temperature of a target from a distance and the electronics convert that reading into a standard analog signal, so a PLC, controller, chart recorder, or data logger can act on the value directly. The unit can be mounted in any position and is built for hostile industrial environments.

It suits high-performance, economical transmitter applications such as process line monitoring, machinery and web surfaces, ovens, and other installations where a permanently mounted, non-contact reading is required. Optional air purge and air/water cooling accessories let the sensing head operate close to hot or dirty processes, while RS-232 connectivity and PC software (supplied with the OS552A through OS554A models) allow configuration and data logging from a laptop.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series offers a choice of temperature ranges, optical fields of view, and analog outputs:

  • Measurement ranges: from -23 to 400°C (-10 to 750°F) up to -18 to 1370°C (0 to 2500°F)
  • Accuracy: ±1% rdg or 1.7°C (3°F), whichever is greater, referenced at 25°C ambient and 0.95 emissivity
  • Repeatability: ±(1% rdg + 1 digit)
  • Response time: 100 ms, 0 to 63.5% of final value
  • Analog output options: 1 mV/degree, 0 to 5 Vdc, or 4 to 20 mA
  • Power: 8 to 24 Vdc, 80 mA
  • Operating temperature: 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F) for the electronics and standard sensing head; up to 85°C (185°F) for the sensing head fitted with the OS550-WC water cooled jacket
  • Enclosure: NEMA 4 (IP65) sensor head with a plastic or aluminum electronics enclosure

Six optical range codes (1 through 6) set the field of view and spot size for the application. NIST calibration certification is available, and the laser sighting option is rated as an FDA Class II laser product and European Class 2.

Configuration Options

Each model is built up from range, analog output, and enclosure choices, and the variants differ mainly in those three dimensions:

  • Range is set by the base model: OS551A covers -23 to 400°C (-10 to 750°F), OS552A covers -23 to 538°C (-10 to 1000°F), OS553A covers -23 to 871°C (-10 to 1600°F), and OS554A covers -18 to 1370°C (0 to 2500°F).
  • Analog output is set by the output suffix: -MV gives a 1 mV/Deg signal, -MA gives 4 to 20 mA, and -V1 gives 0 to 5 Vdc.
  • Enclosure is either the standard plastic case (base code, for example OS552A) or the optional aluminum case (M suffix, for example OS552AM). The plastic case measures 120 H x 80 W x 51 mm and the aluminum case 115 H x 90 W x 56 mm.
  • RS-232 / PC software is standard on the OS552A through OS554A models and is not included on the OS551A.

A trailing optical range code then fixes the field of view for the chosen model.

Key Product Differences

Models follow the structure OS550A - range - analog output - enclosure. The base model determines the temperature span:

  • OS551A / OS551AM — -23 to 400°C (-10 to 750°F)
  • OS552A / OS552AM — -23 to 538°C (-10 to 1000°F)
  • OS553A / OS553AM — -23 to 871°C (-10 to 1600°F)
  • OS554A / OS554AM — -18 to 1370°C (0 to 2500°F)

Fully configured part numbers include examples such as OS552A-MA-2, OS554A-MA-5, and OS554AM-MA-1. Supporting accessories include the OS550-LS laser sighting, OS550-AP air purge collar, OS550-WC air/water cooling jacket, mounting flange, bracket and nut, the WRS232-USB wireless transceiver, the PSR-24S and PSR-24L regulated power supplies, and CAL-3-IR NIST calibration certification.
