Supported Applications

The Omega CL309A is a handheld current loop calibrator designed to check, calibrate, and measure instruments in a 4 to 20 mA DC loop. The device sources and reads current signals, simulates a 2-wire transmitter, and powers 2-wire transmitters while measuring their output. It displays current readings in milliamps or as a percentage of the 4-20 mA range.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The CL309A operates within an ambient temperature range of -20 to 60 °C (-5 to 140 °F) and supports storage from -30 to 60 °C (-22 to 140 °F). Relative humidity limits are defined as 10% ≤RH ≤90% (0 to 35 °C), Non-condensing, or 10% ≤RH ≤70% (35 to 60 °C), Non-condensing. Accuracy specifications vary by mode: the device achieves ±0.025% at 4.00mA and 20.00mA (±0.005mA) for source, power measure, and simulate functions. For EZ-Check™ settings at 4 & 20 mA, accuracy is ≤ ± 0.05% of 24.00mA (±0.01mA). In read modes below 24.01mA, accuracy is ≤ ± 0.05% of 24.00mA (±0.01mA); above 24.00 mA, it is ≤ ± 0.05% of 52.00mA (±0.02mA). Voltage read accuracy is ≤ ± 0.05 % of Full Scale with a resolution of 10mV.

Performance includes loop compliance voltage ≥ 24 DCV @ 20.00mA and loop drive capability of 1200 Ω at 20 mA for 15 hours nominal. The device features overload/current limit protection up to 54 mA nominal in simulate modes, with a voltage burden ≤ 1.2V at 20 mA (simulate) or ≤ 2V at 50 mA (read). Battery life is ≥ 30 hrs at 12 mA nominal for source and power measure mode, and ≥ 125 hours nominal for simulate and read modes.

The CL309A series supports the following measurement ranges and configurations:

  • Current Ranges: Source/Power Measure/Simulate 0.00 to 24.00 mA Full Span OR -25.0 to 125.0% of 4-20 mA; Read mode supports 0.00 to 52.00 mA Full Span OR -25.0 to 300.0% of 4-20 mA.
  • Voltage Range: Reads DC volts from -99.99 to +99.99 VDC with input resistance ≥ 2 MΩ.
  • EZ-CHECK™ Settings: Pre-set outputs at 4.00 mA (0.0%) and 20.00 mA (100.0%).
  • Power Supply: Operates on four (4) 'AA' Alkaline 1.5V batteries (Duracell MN1500 or equivalent).
  • Connections: Red and black banana plugs.
  • Housing: Includes a rubber boot with overall dimensions L=5.63 x W=3.00 x H=1.60 inches (L=14.30 x W=7.62 x H=4.06 centimeters) and weighs 12.1 ounces including boot & batteries.
