Supported Applications

The Omega EXXC-CX-Wire series provides extension wires for thermocouple and RTD/thermistor applications. The product line includes non-compensating Type BC (Platinum 6% Rhodium / Platinum 30% Rhodium) duplex wire, compensating Type CX (W5%Re/W26%Re) duplex wire, and Nickel-Plated Copper wires for thermistor and RTD extension.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Maximum operating temperatures vary by insulation material. For BC Extension Wire with Glass braid, PFA, Polyvinyl, or FEP insulation, the maximum temperature is 100°C (212°F). CX Extension Grade W5%Re/W26%Re Duplex Type CX wire rated for Nextel Ceramic and Glass braid insulations supports a maximum of 200°C (392°F), while PFA-insulated variants in this category also support up to 200°C (392°F). Nickel-Plated Copper Thermistor and RTD Extension Wire with Glass braid insulation is rated for 482°C (900°F); Neoflon PFA insulated versions are rated for 260°C (500°F), and Polyvinyl insulated versions are rated for 105°C (221°F).

Per ASTM E230, special compensating extension wires are not necessary with Type B over the limited temperature range 0° C to 50° C. Non-compensated conductors (copper/copper) will not introduce significant error in this range.

Configuration Options

The series offers multiple insulation types, conductor constructions, and AWG sizes across its three primary categories:

  • Type BC Extension Wire: Available with Glass braid (AWG 20), PFA (AWG 26 stranded), Polyvinyl (AWG 24 solid or stranded), and FEP (AWG 26 stranded) insulation.
  • Type CX Extension Grade W5%Re/W26%Re: Offered with Nextel Ceramic* (standard braid XC, tight braid XT), Glass braid, and PFA insulations in AWG 24 solid construction. The PFA variant features a brown jacket with white positive leg and red negative leg.
  • Nickel-Plated Copper Wire: Configurable as 2-conductor (AWG 20 or 26), 3-conductor, or 4-conductor cables in AWG 26 stranded. Insulation options include Glass braid, Neoflon PFA, and Polyvinyl.

Color coding varies by model: EXGG Wire uses White/Red Trace for the positive wire and Red for the negative; EXXT Wire uses White for the positive leg and White/Red Trace for the negative. Nickel-Plated Copper variants use specific tracer codes such as 2 Cu–Rd/Bk, 3 Cu–Rd/Bk/Bk, or 4 Cu–Rd/Rd/Bk/Bk.

Key Product Differences

The series distinguishes between standard and tight braid constructions for Nextel Ceramic insulation (XC versus XT designations). Model numbers indicate the specific wire type, conductor count, AWG size, and insulation material. For example, EXGG denotes Glass insulated Type BC or CX wire, while ETTT indicates PFA-insulated variants. Nickel-Plated Copper models include a numeric prefix indicating the number of conductors (e.g., 2CU, 3CU, 4CU). Nominal sizes range from 1.3 x 2.0 mm to diameters up to 2.6 mm depending on insulation and conductor count.
