Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series ACT Actuators provide valve and damper control for industrial automation processes. The series utilizes a standard ISO 5211 mounting configuration to facilitate installation on compatible valves or dampers. Pneumatic models feature a compact rack-and-pinion design intended for applications requiring fast, steady action with high output power in harsh environments. Electric models are configured for two-position (on/off) control or modulating service where precise positioning is required.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Pneumatic DA and SR series actuators operate within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 176°F (-40 to 80°C). The normal supply pressure for double-acting (DA) models is 40 to 115 psi (2.7 to 7.9 bar), while spring return (SR) models operate at a normal supply pressure of 80 psi (5.5 bar). Both pneumatic series support a maximum supply pressure of 120 psi (8.6 bar).

Electric TD and MD series actuators are rated for an ambient temperature range of -22 to 140°F (-30 to 60°C) with an enclosure rating of NEMA 4X (IP67). The TI and MI explosion-proof electric series operate from -40 to 140°F (-40 to 60°C) within a NEMA 7 rated enclosure. Electric models accept power supplies of 110 VAC, 220 VAC, 24 VAC, or 24 VDC (with specific voltage availability dependent on the model series).

Performance Specifications

  • Pneumatic Torque: Double-acting models range from 98 in-lb to 33516 in-lb; spring return torque varies by air pressure and position (0° or 90°).
  • Electric Duty Rating: TD and MD series operate at an 85% duty rating.
  • Cycle Time (per 90°): Electric models range from 4 s for the smallest units to 45 s for larger sizes, depending on the specific model number.
  • Modulating Input: Available as a 4 to 20 mA signal for MD and MI series actuators.

Configuration Options

The Series ACT encompasses four primary actuator families with distinct mechanical and electrical configurations:
  • Pneumatic DA (Double Acting): Rack-and-pinion design available in sizes 01 through 14. Features anodized aluminum bodies with epoxy coated end caps.
  • Pneumatic SR (Spring Return): Spring return rack-and-pinion models sized from 02 to 14, providing fail-safe positioning upon air loss.
  • Electric TD/MD: Two-position and modulating actuators with NEMA 4X (IP67) enclosures. Standard features include manual override, position indicators, and two auxiliary limit switches on TD models; MD models offer a 4 to 20 mA output for position monitoring.
  • Electric TI/MI: Explosion-proof actuators with NEMA 7 rated powder coated aluminum housings. These units feature visual indicators and standard limit switches.

Configurable Options & Accessories

The series supports the following accessories for pneumatic models:
  • Solenoids: SN-3A (3/2 NAMUR 110 VAC) and SN-5A (5/2 NAMUR 110 VAC).
  • Volume Booster: VB-01.

Air connections vary by model size: DA01 utilizes a 1/8" female NPT, while DA02 through DA14 and SR02 through SR14 utilize 1/4" female NPT. Electric models feature a standard 1/2" female NPT electrical connection.

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between pneumatic and electric variants lies in the power source, enclosure rating, and control logic. Pneumatic DA series require air pressure on both sides of the piston for movement, whereas SR series utilize a spring to return the valve to a default position when air is removed.

Electric TD models are designed for two-position operation with standard limit switches, while MD modulating models incorporate feedback mechanisms (4 to 20 mA output) and accept analog control signals. The TI and MI series differ from the TD/MD line by providing NEMA 7 explosion-proof ratings instead of NEMA 4X/IP67 protection.

Voltage availability varies across electric families: MD models are not available in 24 VDC, while certain voltage options (such as 12VDC) appear only on specific TI/MI variants. Torque output scales with model number size within each family, ranging from low-torque units suitable for small valves to high-torque configurations exceeding 30,000 in-lb.
