Supported Applications

The Omega FOM-Series Fiber Optic Monitors are designed for precise temperature measurement in environments where non-electrical sensing is required. The series utilizes fiber optic technology to transfer information via light, ensuring the signal remains reliable and unaffected by external forces such as EMI, RFI, NMR, or microwave radiation.

Documented applications include:

  • Transformer factories
  • Chemical processing
  • Medical equipment testing (MRI, PETSCAN, NMR)
  • Commercial grade microwave heating
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Electric vehicle and battery testing
  • Wood drying

Operating Conditions & Performance

The FOM-Series monitors operate within a process temperature range of -80 to 300°C (-112 to 572°F). The ambient operating temperature is specified as -40 ° to 55 °C, non-condensing. Accuracy for the series is ±1.0°C (1.8°F), with relative temperature accuracy noted as +/- 0.2°C.

Performance characteristics include a display resolution of 0.1°C and a response time typically ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 seconds per channel. The system supports up to eight channels, depending on the specific model configuration. Temperature units are displayed in °C only by default, with °F selectable via Omega Fiber Optic Sensing software.

Configuration Options

The series is available in two primary versions distinguished by power supply and portability:

  • FOM-L201 Series: USB-powered units with dimensions of 4.9" x 7.1" x 2.7" (125 mm x 180 mm x 69 mm) and a weight of 450 g (15.8 oz).
  • FOM-H201 Series: Includes a rechargeable battery for portability, with dimensions of 4.9" x 7.1" x 2.7" (125 mm x 180 mm x 69 mm) and a weight of 600 g (21.1 oz).

Connectivity options include an ST Connector for fiber optic probes, USB output with Modbus protocol support, and RS-485 communication. The system features a MicroSD external memory slot supporting cards up to 2 TB (card not included). Analog outputs are available via the optional FOM-AOUT accessory, providing configurable 0-10 V or 4-20 mA signals across eight programmable outputs.

The monitors comply with multiple standards including CE marking certification, FCC Part 15, IEC 61010-1 (2010) for the Low Voltage Directive, and environmental directives RoHS 2015/863/EU, WEEE 2012/19/EU, and REACH CE No 1907/2006. The enclosure rating is IP20.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the FOM-Series are differentiated by channel count (2 through 8) and power configuration. Model numbers follow the format FOM--, such as FOM-L201-6 for a 6-channel USB-powered monitor or FOM-H201-4 for a 4-channel battery-operated unit.

Key distinctions between versions include:

  • FOM-L201 models: Designed for stationary use with USB power supply (5 VDC).
  • FOM-H201 models: Equipped with a rechargeable battery to enable portable operation.

Both versions are compatible with all Omega fiber optic probes and most competitive GaAs probes. A case accessory is available for storage and transportation.
