Supported Applications
The Omega FD-400 Series Doppler Ultrasonic Flow Meter measures liquid flow rate using non-invasive clamp-on transducers or insertion probes. The series is designed for liquids containing suspended solids, gas bubbles, or other sonic reflectors greater than 100 microns at a concentration of 100 ppm. Documented media include water, wastewater, sewage, slurries, and chemicals.
Applications leverage the clamp-on installation method to measure flow on existing pipes without cutting or disrupting service. The system supports synchronization for up to four meters in a single piping system spaced up to 30 m (100') apart.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The FD-400 Series operates with a flow velocity range of 0.05 to 9 mps (0.15 to 30 fps). Accuracy is specified as ±2% FS over the calibrated span, with user-selectable response times from 1 to 60 seconds.
Operating conditions vary by transducer type:
- Ambient Temperature (Monitor): -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F)
- Process Temperature (Standard Clamp-On & Insertion Probe): -40 to 100°C (-40 to 210°F)
- Process Temperature (High-Temp Clamp-On): -40 to 200°C (-40 to 400°F)
- Pressure Rating: Up to 700 psi (48 bar) max for insertion probes; clamp-on ratings depend on pipe integrity.
The monitor enclosure is rated NEMA 4X (IP66). Standard clamp-on transducers are rated NEMA 6P (IP68), while high-temperature clamp-ons are rated NEMA 4 (IP65).
Configuration Options
The series offers a wide range of configuration options for power, output signals, and sensor installation methods.
- Power Supply: Standard units accept 115/230 Vac (±15%, 5 VA max) or 12 to 28 Vdc (2.5 VA max). Specific power options are selected at order placement via model suffixes.
- Output Signals: Models provide various combinations of 4-20 mA, rate pulse outputs, and control relays. The 4-20 mA output supports a load resistance up to 800 Ω max with optically isolated circuitry.
- Relay Outputs: Dual relay configurations are available as form 'C', rated at 200 Vac @ 0.5 A resistive, configurable for rate alarm, totalizer pulse, or error indication.
- Pulse Output: Rate pulse options include two types: 500 mVac (into 2 kΩ min) or open collector (1 A at 100 V max), with a maximum frequency of 2500 Hz.
Sensor and Installation Options
Transducers are sold separately from the monitor unit. The series supports multiple installation configurations:
- Clamp-On Transducers: Available in standard sizes for pipes 25 mm to 3 m (1" to 120") and small-pipe sets for 6 to 25 mm (¼" to 1"). High-temperature versions are available for process temperatures up to 200°C.
- Insertion Probes: Available in lengths from 8" to 48", featuring a NEMA 6 (IP67) rating. Wetted materials include 316 SS, Ultem®, FKM, and nylon.
- Cable Lengths: Standard cable length is 6 m (20'). Options for 50' or 100' cables are available via model suffixes; armored conduit options require consultation with Engineering.
Display and Configuration
The monitor features a 2-line backlit LCD display showing rate and totalizer values. Units can be configured for various engineering units including feet, gallons, liters, cubic meters, acre-feet, oil barrels (42 gallon), liquor barrels (32.5 gallons), lb, and kg.
Key Product Differences
The FD-400 Series is differentiated by output configuration and power supply options:
- FD-400: Basic rate and totalizer with no analog or relay outputs.
- FD-41x Models (e.g., FD-410, FD-411): Include one or two 4-20 mA outputs; some models combine 4-20 mA with pulse or relay outputs.
- FD-42x Models (e.g., FD-420, FD-422): Feature dual or quad relay configurations for alarm and control applications.
- FD-43x Models (e.g., FD-430, FD-433): Provide rate pulse outputs in single or double channel configurations.
Power supply variations are indicated by suffixes such as "-230VAC" for 230 Vac units and "-24VDC" for 24 Vdc units. Transducer model numbers distinguish between standard clamp-on (FD-400C), small-pipe clamp-on, high-temp versions (-HT), and insertion probes (FD-400I).
