Supported Applications
The Omega tDS-700 Series consists of Serial-to-Ethernet device servers designed to add Ethernet and Internet connectivity to RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 devices. These units eliminate the cable length limitations inherent in legacy serial communications by routing data over TCP/IP networks. The series supports Factory Automation, Building Automation, Home Automation, and Remote Diagnosis and Management applications.
Functionality includes virtualizing a built-in COM port to a standard PC COM Port via the VxComm Driver/Utility for transparent access without software modification. Additionally, the device servers support pair-connection configurations (serial-bridge or serial-tunnel) to route data between two serial devices over Ethernet.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The tDS-700 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -25 °C ~ +75 °C and a storage temperature range of -30 °C ~ +80 °C. Humidity ratings are specified as 10 ~ 90% RH, non-condensing.
Power is supplied via redundant inputs: IEEE 802.3af PoE (Class 1) or a DC jack accepting +12 to +48 VDC. Power consumption is rated at 0.05 A @ 24 VDC. The Ethernet interface supports 10/100 Base-TX with Auto-negotiating and Auto-MDI/MDIX via an 8-pin RJ-45 connector.
Serial communication parameters include a maximum baud rate of 115200 bps, data bits of 5, 6, 7, or 8, parity options (None, Odd, Even, Mark, Space), and stop bits of 1 or 2. The UART is specified as 16c550 or compatible.
Approvals & Materials
- Certifications: CE, FCC, RoHS compliant with no Halogen
- Housing Material: Fire Retardant Materials (UL94-V0 Level)
Configuration Options
The series offers multiple configurations based on the number and type of serial ports required. Models are available in DIN-Rail mounting form factors with dimensions varying by port count.
Serial Port Configurations (COM1, COM2, COM3)
- tDS-712: 5-wire RS-232
- tDS-722: 5-wire RS-232 x 2 (COM1 and COM2)
- tDS-732: 3-wire RS-232 x 3 (COM1, COM2, COM3)
- tDS-715: 2-wire RS-485 / 4-wire RS-422
- tDS-725: 2-wire RS-485 x 2 (COM1 and COM2)
- tDS-735: 2-wire RS-485 x 3 (COM1, COM2, COM3)
- tDS-718: Multi-mode port supporting 3-wire RS-232 / 2-wire RS-485 / 4-wire RS-422
- tDS-724: COM1: 2-wire RS-485; COM2: 5-wire RS-232
- tDS-734: COM1: 2-wire RS-485; COM2 & COM3: 3-wire RS-232
Connectors and Physical Interface
The tDS-712 model utilizes a Male DB-9 connector for serial communication. All other models in the series use a 10-Pin Removable Terminal Block.
- tDS-712 Dimensions: 52 x 90 x 27 mm (W x H x D)
- All Other Models Dimensions: 52 x 95 x 27 mm (W x H x D)
Advanced Features
Certain models include a Self-Tuner feature for automatic RS-485 direction control. The series supports TCP, UDP, HTTP, DHCP, BOOTP, and TFTP protocols, along with a built-in web server for configuration.
Key Product Differences
The tDS-700 Series is distinct from the PPDS-700-MTCP Series in that it does not include programmable logic or Virtual I/O capabilities. While both series support Ethernet, PoE, DHCP, Web Configuration, and UDP Search, only the PPDS-700-MTCP offers Modbus Gateway functionality and Multi-client support.
Within the tDS family, a companion line known as the tGW-700 Series functions specifically as Tiny Modbus/TCP to RTU/ASCII Gateways. The tGW models share identical physical dimensions, power specifications, and port configurations with their tDS counterparts but are optimized for protocol conversion between Ethernet-based hosts and serial devices.
Model nomenclature indicates the specific interface configuration: '712' denotes one RS-232 port; '722' denotes two RS-232 ports; '732' denotes three RS-232 ports. Models ending in '5' (e.g., tDS-715) indicate RS-485/RS-422 interfaces, while models with an '8' or '4' denote mixed-mode or multi-port combinations.
