The Omega SGD Extra Long Linear Strain Gages are precision instruments designed for strain measurement in materials. The series features an extra-long pattern specifically intended for use with non-homogenous (inhomogeneous) materials, alongside standard linear patterns.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series supports nominal resistances of 120 Ω, 240 Ω, 350 Ω, and 1000 Ω. Maximum permitted bridge energizing voltage (Vrms) varies by model configuration; documented values include 10 Vrms through 75 Vrms depending on grid size and resistance.
Temperature compensation options are available for Steel (ST), Aluminum (AL), or Uncompensated (UNC). The series includes models with term pads designated as BPT-5 and BPT-6, while other configurations do not include a specified term pad. Dimensions vary by grid size; the extra-long pattern table lists carrier dimensions ranging from 36.00 mm to 165.00 mm.
Configuration Options
The SGD series offers configurable options across grid sizes, resistances, terminations, and temperature compensation materials. The model number guide follows the format: SGD-/-.
- Grid Sizes: Available in 10 mm, 13 mm, 25 mm (SGD-30), 30 mm (SGD-30N and SGD-30), 50 mm, and 150 mm.
- Nominal Resistance: Options include 120 Ω, 240 Ω, 350 Ω, and 1000 Ω.
- Termination Types: Models are offered with Ribbon Leads or Solder Pads.
- Packaging: Standard linear patterns (SGD-10/xxx and SGD-13/xxx) are packaged in quantities of 10. Extra-long models for inhomogeneous materials (e.g., SGD-30, SGD-50, SGD-150) are packaged in quantities of 5.
- Temperature Compensation: Configurable for Steel (ST), Aluminum (AL), or Uncompensated (UNC).
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between standard precision linear patterns and extra-long patterns designed for inhomogeneous materials. The "Extra-Long For Inhomogeneous Material" table lists specific models such as SGD-30/120-LY40, SGD-30N/120-LY40, SGD-50/120-LY40, and SGD-150/240-LY40. These extra-long variants feature larger carrier dimensions (C) ranging from 36.00 mm to 165.00 mm compared to the standard linear patterns which have carrier C dimensions of 17.70 mm or 22.70 mm.
Termination differences are evident across model numbers: models ending in "-LY1" and "-LY3" utilize Ribbon Leads, while those ending in "-LY4" feature Solder Pads. Additionally, the SGD-30N variant presents a distinct grid geometry with Grid A at 30.00 mm (1.181 inch) and Grid B at 3.00 mm (0.118 inch), differing from the standard SGD-30 which lists Grid A as 25.00 mm or 30.00 mm depending on resistance, with a corresponding change in carrier dimensions.

How thick is this strain gauge?

Hi, id like to know what type of wire do you use to make the connection between the dataloggers and the strain gauges? Thank you.
Typically you use 4 conductor shielded cable to attach the strain gage bridges to the data logger. Description is as follows. 24 AWG Tinned Copper Wires , PVC Insulation, Aluminum-Polyester Shield with #24 Drain Wire, PVC Jacket Overall.

Hi there I am hoping to attach a large number of strain gauges toa concrete surface, I need to know the compatibility with these strain gauges and a CR1000 series data logger
Rodney, thank you for reaching out to us, the strain gauge will be bonded to the concrete and you will need to complete your bridge first. It appears the CR1000 IS A CAMPBELSCI Data logger, you may have to check with them, on whether it can complete a bridge and log full bridge circuits. Are these strain gauges good for composite materials like carbon fiber? I would like to do some beam bending testing on a carbon fiber rod, but I'm not sure if these gauges are applicable to such an application.
Ethan, we have had customers use these strain gauges with composite materials in the past with success, please note that we do not however carry the adhesives that are compatible with composite materials.
