Supported Applications

The Omega BCM-2 Series Bridge Completion Module is designed to complete strain gage bridge circuits where instrumentation does not include built-in bridge completion resistors or 'dummy' gages. The module employs metal-foil resistance elements bonded to a dense ceramic substrate, with thermal expansion matched to minimize temperature effects.

Documented applications for the series include:

  • Quarter-bridge strain gage circuits
  • Half-bridge strain gage circuits of any resistance value
  • 120 Ω or 350 Ω three-wire quarter-bridge circuits (BCM-2-350R)

Operating Conditions & Performance

The BCM-2 Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -45 °C to +120 °C [-50 °F to +250 °F]. The specified process operating temperature is -18 °C to +95 °C [0 °F to +200 °F].

Resistance elements are processed to match the thermal expansion coefficient of the ceramic, resulting in a low resistance temperature coefficient. Over the range from -18 °C to +95 °C [0 °F to +200 °F], this is equivalent to ±0.27 με/°C [±0.15 με/°F] for half-bridge circuits and ±0.63 με/°C [±0.35 με/°F] for dummy gages.

Excitation voltage limits vary by configuration:

  • D120 Configuration: Recommended 0.5 V to 15 V; Maximum 20 V
  • D350 Configuration: Recommended 0.5 V to 25 V; Maximum 35 V

Configuration Options

The series is available in the BCM-2-120R and BCM-2-350R models, providing specific resistance values for bridge completion.

  • BCM-2-350R: Provides a precision 350 Ω half bridge as well as 120 Ω and 350 Ω dummy gages. Recommended for use with half-bridge strain gage circuits of any resistance value, or with 120 Ω or 350 Ω three-wire quarter-bridge circuits.
  • Dimensions: 25 mm x 25 mm x 5 mm [1 in x 1 in x 0.2 in] (including foam tape).
  • Weight: 6 g
  • Housing Material: Rugged aluminum overlay.
  • Electrical Connection: Tinned, heavy copper terminals for leadwires up to 0.64 mm diameter [22-gage].

The module is covered with a special environmental protection system ensuring long-term stability. A rugged aluminum overlay, embossed with a wiring diagram for easy terminal identification, affords additional protection; in many applications no supplementary environmental protection is required.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the BCM-2 Series are distinguished by their resistance values and intended bridge configurations:

  • BCM-2-120R: Listed as an enabled variant for strain gauge accessories.
  • BCM-2-350R: Provides a precision 350 Ω half bridge along with 120 Ω and 350 Ω dummy gages, supporting both quarter-bridge (three-wire) and half-bridge circuits of any resistance value.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not convenient to use It will be more convenient if this can be connected to strain gauge with screw terminals. If will be great that

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Successful connections and readings. I was able to attach connecting wires to the terminals easily. With a soldering iron, I connected the wires. Using the circuit diagrams online, I completed the connection with a DC power supply, a meter, and the 120 ohm strain gauge. I'm getting good readings so far!

what are the power supply requirements for this module? how come there is no specification sheet or manual available for this product?

Asked by: serg10
There is no power specification for the BCM-2. The is simply a bridge completion circuit for use with strain gages. The excitation voltage applied to the P+ and P- terminal depends on the maximum allowable excitation of the particular strain gage you are using with the BCM-2. This value varies with the size and resistance of the strain gages

If one wanted to shunt calibrate one of these devices, which terminals should the shunt resistor be placed?

Asked by: Wyman
Thank you for your inquiry, shunt calibration is usually connected across the negative excitation and the negative output terminals
