Supported Applications
The Omega SGD-BIAXIAL series consists of precision strain gage tee stacked rosettes designed for measuring axial strain. These biaxial, stacked 0 ° - 90 ° corner T-rosette configurations feature a two-element arrangement suitable for applications requiring directional strain analysis.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series is available in small, medium, and large patterns with nominal resistances of 120 Ω and 350 Ω. Maximum permitted bridge energizing voltage (Vrms) varies by model configuration:
- SGD-2 Series: Ranges from 3 Vrms to 7 Vrms depending on resistance, termination, and temperature compensation.
- SGD-3 Series: Ranges from 4.5 Vrms to 10 Vrms.
- SGD-7 Series: Ranges from 9 Vrms to 20 Vrms.
Grid dimensions are defined by active gage length (A), active gage width (B), matrix length (C), and matrix width (D). For example, the SGD-2 pattern features a grid with A = 2.00 mm, B = 1.10 mm, C = 5.60 mm, and D = 5.60 mm.
Dimensional Specifications
- SGD-2 (Small): Grid A: 2.00 mm; B: 1.10 mm; C: 5.60 mm; D: 5.60 mm.
- SGD-3 (Medium): Grid A: 3.00 mm; B: 1.70 mm; C: 7.10 mm; D: 7.10 mm.
- SGD-7 (Large): Grid A: 6.50 mm; B: 3.10 mm; C: 11.40 mm; D: 11.40 mm.
Note: Inch equivalents are provided in the specification table for specific models (e.g., SGD-2/120-XY13 lists A as 0.079 inch).
Configuration Options
The series supports multiple configuration options to accommodate different installation and measurement requirements:
- Nominal Resistance: 120 Ω or 350 Ω.
- Termination Types: Ribbon Leads (e.g., XY1, XY3) or Solder Pads (e.g., XY4).
- Temperature Compensation: Steel (ST) or Aluminum (AL).
- Term Pad Options: BTP-2 for SGD-2 models, BTP-3 for SGD-3 models, and BTP-4 for SGD-7 models.
Custom-designed strain gages are available with no minimum quantities; consult engineering for specific requirements. Accessories are also offered online.
Key Product Differences
Variants within the SGD-BIAXIAL series differ primarily by grid size, resistance value, termination method, and temperature compensation material:
- Grid Size (Pattern): Models are designated as SGD-2, SGD-3, or SGD-7 corresponding to small, medium, and large patterns respectively.
- Resistance: Each grid size is offered in 120 Ω and 350 Ω nominal resistance options.
- Termination & Compensation Codes:
The model number guide follows the format SGD-<SIZE>/<RESISTANCE>-XY<TERMINATION><TEMP_COMP>. For example, SGD-7/350-XY11 denotes a 6.5 mm grid (large pattern), 350 Ω resistance, ribbon leads termination, and steel temperature compensation.
Dual-unit dimension listings in the source table present metric values for some rows and inch equivalents for others within the same column; these are preserved exactly as printed without conversion or pairing across units not explicitly linked in a single cell.

Reduced Expectations
The previous strain gages that I purchased shipped with ALL technical data (coefficients and compensation curves) and had ribbon leads that were about 36 inches long. This set minimal technical data (no temperature compensation coefficients) and had ribbon leads about 2 inches long, barely enough to attach extension wire for measurement purposes. The product size and function was correct and consistent with the advertised parameters. Shipping time took 4 business days before leaving Omega, this hindered expected arrival of parts for project progress.
