Supported Applications
The Omega/HBM M Series encapsulated foil strain gages are engineered for high resistance to alternating loads and operation at elevated temperatures up to 300°C (572°F). These sensors utilize a special nickel-chromium alloy foil, making them suitable for testing high-strength materials such as fiber composites. The series supports various measurement geometries including linear strain in one direction, tension and compression via T rosettes, shear stress determination with V-shaped configurations, and biaxial stress state analysis using rectangular or stacked rosette arrangements.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The M Series operates within a temperature range of -200 to 300°C (-328 to 662°F). The carrier material is glass fiber reinforced phenolic with a thickness of 35 ±10 μm, while the grid foil consists of CrNi (nickel-chromium) at 5 μm thick. Encapsulation utilizes polyimide film measuring 25 ±5 μm in thickness. Electrical connections are provided via solder pads with strain relief.
Performance specifications include a nominal resistance of 350 and 1000 Ω, with a gage factor approximately equal to 2.2 (specified on each package). The maximum permitted effective excitation voltage ranges from 7 to 22 V depending on the specific model configuration. Mechanical limits allow for positive elongation up to 10,000 μm/m (1%) and negative elongation down to -15,000 μm/m (-1.5%). Fatigue life data indicates performance of 10⁷ cycles at 2000 μm/m, 10⁶ cycles at 2200 μm/m, and 10⁴ cycles at 3100 μm/m.
Configuration Options
The series offers a broad envelope of configurable dimensions and geometries to address specific strain measurement needs. Available measuring grid lengths include 1.5 mm (0.06"), 3 mm (0.12"), and 6 mm (0.24"). The following geometry types are supported:
- LM1: Linear strain gage with one measurement grid measuring strain in one direction.
- TM1: T rosette with two measurement grids offset by 90° for tension and compression.
- TM9: Stacked T rosette with two measurement grids offset by 90° for tension and compression.
- XM4: V-shaped strain gage with two measurement grids arranged at ±45° to the axis for shear stress determination.
- RM8: Rectangular strain gage rosette with three measurement grids at 0°/45°/90° for biaxial stress states with unknown principal stress direction.
- RM9: Stacked strain gage rosette with three measurement grids at 0°/45°/90° for biaxial stress states with unknown principal stress direction.
Bonding materials compatible with the series include Z70 rapid adhesive (single component cold curing cyanacrylate) and EP310S high temperature adhesive (two-component epoxy resin). Accessories such as 1-BCY01 accelerator, 1-RMS1 cleaning solvent, and 1-RMS1-SPRAY are available to support installation.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between linear gages (LM1), T rosettes (TM1, TM9), V-shaped shear gages (XM4), and rectangular/stacked rosettes (RM8, RM9). Model numbers follow the format 1--/GE. For example, a model may be designated as 1-RM91-1.5/350GE.
Packaging quantities vary by geometry: all models are sold in 5-packs except the LM1 series, which is sold in 10-packs. Excitation voltage limits differ based on grid length and configuration; for instance, a 1-LM11-1.5/350GE lists a maximum of 7 V, while a 1-TM11-6/350GE supports up to 22 V.
