Supported Applications
The Omega LCHD/LCMHD-IS Series consists of intrinsically safe, ultra-low profile load cells designed for tension or compression measurement in hazardous locations. These pancake and canister-style transducers are engineered to meet FM Intrinsically Safe ratings for use where explosive atmospheres may be present.
Documented approvals support installation in the following classified environments:
- Intrinsically Safe Class I, II, III, Division 1 Groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G
- Class I, Zone 0 (AEx ia IIC for US; Ex ia IIC for Canada)
- Non-Incendive Class I, Division 2 Groups A, B, C, D (US and Canada), with conduit electrical connections only
The series is intended for applications requiring low-profile mounting in hazardous areas where standard load cells cannot be safely deployed.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The LCHD/LCMHD-IS Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 75°C (-40 to 167°F). Temperature compensation is specified for the range 16 to 71°C (60 to 160°F).
- Excitation Voltage: 10 to 28 Vdc
- Nonlinearity: 0.10 %F.S.O.
- Hysteresis: 0.10 %F.S.O.
- Repeatability: 0.05 %F.S.O.
- Zero Balance: 4 mA +10%, -2% adjustable
- Safe Overload: 150% of Capacity
- Ultimate Overload: 300% of Capacity
Temperature effects are specified as ±0.005 %FSO/°F (±0.009%FSO/°C) for Zero and ±0.005 %Reading/°F (±0.009%Reading/°C) for Span.
Measurement Ranges
The series offers capacities ranging from 7,500 to 500,000 lb and metric equivalents of 5,000 kg to 10,000 kg. Specific capacity ranges include:
- Standard (LCHD): 7,500 lb through 500,000 lb
- Metric (LCMHD): 5,000 kg through 10,000 kg
Note: Ranges over 300,000 lb are calibrated at 300,000 lb.
Configuration Options
The LCHD/LCMHD-IS Series is constructed from Stainless Steel 17-4. The series supports multiple electrical termination options to accommodate various installation requirements:
- Cable Options: PVC cable (lengths vary by model, e.g., 4.6 m / 15' or 2 m / 6.6'), and submersible waterproof cable (3 m / 10')
- Connectors: PTIH-10-6P twist-lock, M12 4-pin, mini-DIN
- Conduit: Metric models offer a PVC cable with ½ NPT conduit option (suffix '0')
Output signals are configurable via suffix selection:
- C2IS: FM Intrinsically Safe 4 to 20 mA Output, calibrated 0 to full scale in tension
- BC2IS: FM Intrinsically Safe 4-12-20 mA Output, calibrated (-)full scale to (+)full scale (bidirectional)
The series includes a final suffix option for potentiometers: standard configuration includes them; the 'NP' suffix indicates no potentiometers.
Dimensions and Mounting
Physical dimensions vary by capacity. For example, the 7500–15,000 lb range features a diameter (D) of 140 mm (5.50 in), height (H) of 46 mm (1.80 in), and thread size T of 1-14UNS-2B. The largest capacity range (300,000–500,000 lb) has a diameter of 356 mm (14.00 in), height of 108 mm (4.25 in), and thread size T of 3½-8UN-2B.
Accessories
The series supports various accessories including tension plates, load buttons, rod ends, and compatible meters:
- Tension Plates: Models such as LCHD-TP450 (7500 to 15,000 lb ranges) and LCMHD-TP488 (20,000 to 50,000 lb ranges)
- Load Buttons: Examples include LBC-100, LBC-112, MLBC-M24, MLBC-M36
- Rod Ends: REC-100M, REC-112M
- Meters: DP41-E, DP25B-E, DPI8 (6-digit display)
Key Product Differences
The series is divided into two primary model families based on capacity units and dimensional standards:
- LCHD-IS: Standard inch-pound models with capacities from 7,500 to 500,000 lb. Thread sizes range from 1-14UNS-2B to 3½-8UN-2B.
- LCMHD-IS: Metric models with capacities of 5,000 kg and 7,500 kg (up to 10,000 kg). Thread sizes include M24 x 2.0-6H and M36 x 2.0-6H.
Electrical termination suffixes differ slightly between the two families; for instance, metric models (LCMHD) offer a '0' suffix specifically denoting "2 m (6.6') PVC cable with ½ NPT conduit," whereas standard inch-pound models list "4.6 m (15') PVC cable" as the default '0' option.
Both families share identical performance specifications, including nonlinearity of 0.10 %F.S.O., hysteresis of 0.10 %F.S.O., and repeatability of 0.05 %F.S.O. The housing material for all variants is Stainless Steel 17-4.
