The ACI Balco Room Series consists of temperature sensors designed for room temperature monitoring and control. These units are intended for indoor environmental applications, providing a single-point measurement interface to building management systems or controllers via analog signals.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates within an ambient temperature range of 1.5 to 50 °C (35 to 122 °F) and supports storage temperatures from -40 to 65 °C (-40 to 149 °F). Operating humidity is rated at 10 to 95% RH, non-condensing.

Performance specifications vary by sensor element. The BALCO series offers an accuracy of +/- 1% @ 21.1 °C (70 °F) with a nominal output of 1 KΩ @ 21.1 °C (70 °F). Other available elements in the broader ACI Room family include Platinum RTDs, NICKEL sensors, and various thermistor configurations.

The series supports multiple configuration options to accommodate specific installation requirements, including housing styles, communication interfaces, and control features.

Housing & Enclosure Options

  • R Enclosure: ABS Plastic | Beige UL94-HB. Dimensions: 2.75" (69.85 mm) height x 4.50" (114.30 mm) width x 1.12" (28.55 mm) depth.
  • R2 Enclosure: ABS Plastic | White, UL94-HB. Dimensions: 2.75" (69.85 mm) height x 4.50" (114.30 mm) width x 1.12" (28.55 mm) depth.
  • Mounting: Designed for wall or junction box mounting using drywall anchors; secured with two 1/16" Allen screws.

Sensor & Output Configurations

  • Sensor Types: BALCO, NICKEL, Platinum RTD (A/100, A/1K), and various Thermistors (e.g., A/1.8K, A/AN, A/CP).
  • Outputs: Analog signals for temperature sensor signal common/set point to controller analog input.
  • Override Options: Short Thermistor (Default) or Field Selectable "Dry Contact" Closure via jumper shunts.

Communication & Display Features

  • LCD Display: Available on select models; requires 24 VAC or 9-35 VDC power. Displays °F (Fahrenheit) or °C (Celsius).
  • Connectors: Screw Terminal Blocks (Non-Polarity Sensitive) for wire sizes 16 AWG (1.31 mm²) to 26 AWG (0.129 mm²). Optional communication jacks include RJ4, RJ6, or 3.5 mm Stereo Jack.

Accessories & Special Options

  • A/ROOM-FOAM-PAD: Thermally-insulated backing (3.175 mm / 1/8 in foam) for solid walls such as concrete or steel.
  • NIST Certificate: Available for "R" and "R2" configurations only; not compatible with LCD Display units.

Key Product Differences

The series distinguishes between standard room sensors (e.g., A/BALCO-R, A/BALCO-R2) and models equipped with setpoint or override capabilities. The "R" style enclosure is beige, while the "R2" style is white.

  • Setpoint & Override: Models such as RSO (Room with Set Point and Override), RS (Room with Set Point), and RO (Room with Override) provide additional analog outputs for control logic. The default override configuration uses a short thermistor, but field-selectable dry contact closure is available.
  • LCD Integration: LCD Display units are factory calibrated at a single point using two temperature sensors to monitor ambient air. These units require specific power supplies (24 VAC or 9-35 VDC) and have distinct storage limits (-10 °C to 65 °C for LCD vs -40 °C to 65 °C for non-LCD).
  • Communication Jacks: Variants may include RJ4, RJ6, or 3.5 mm stereo jacks for configuration via a portable operator's terminal.
