Supported Applications

Super OMEGACLAD® XL is a low-drift mineral-insulated thermocouple cable engineered for continuous service at elevated temperatures, rated for use up to 1150°C (2102°F). The construction pairs special limits of error thermocouple conductors with MgO insulation inside a nickel-chrome based Super OMEGACLAD XL sheath, making it a stable, accurate raw material for fabricating high-temperature temperature sensors.

Because it is supplied as bulk sensor cable, it can be cut to length or ordered in long continuous lengths and formed into probes and thermocouple assemblies. Its sheath resists attack in demanding atmospheres, giving it strong suitability for exposure to combustion gases or air, high temperature chlorine-contaminated oxidizing environments, and ammonia/nitride-rich environments (above 980°C / 1800°F).

Operating Conditions & Performance

The cable operates over a measurement range of 0 to 1150°C (2102°F), and the sheath can withstand long-term exposure to combustion gases or air at temperatures up to 1150°C (2102°F), with short-term exposures to higher temperatures also possible. It is offered to Special Limits of Error (SLE), and its low-drift character is characterized by a drift of 4.6°C (8.4°F) @ 1149°C (2102°F).

The Super OMEGACLAD XL sheath alloy carries a melting temperature of 1380°C (2516°F), giving substantial headroom above the service range. Representative physical properties of the sheath include a density of 8.5 g/cu³, a tensile strength of 50 MPa, a modulus of elasticity of 137 GPa, an elongation of 80%, a thermal conductivity of 36.7 W/m-K, and an electrical resistivity of 698 Ω-cir-mil ft. These properties combine to deliver the superior oxidation resistance and dimensional stability that distinguish the material at high temperature.

Cable is available across sheath diameters spanning 0.010 inch to 0.313 inch (0.25 mm to 8.0 mm), with each diameter offered at a defined wall thickness and conductor size. Type K or Type N calibration wire is available, and special requests can be taken for other calibrations.

Configuration Options

Variants within the series are distinguished by four independent choices, each of which changes the cable's capability rather than merely its size:

  • Calibration type — Type K (CHROMEGA-ALOMEGA) or Type N cable, selected via the calibration character in the model number, with other calibrations available on request.
  • Error class — standard construction versus a Special Limits of Error build, denoted by an SLE suffix (for example XL-K-MO-125-SLE), which tightens tolerance for more demanding measurements.
  • Conductor count — single-conductor cable versus dual-wire construction, marked by a DUAL suffix (for example XL-K-MO-062-DUAL), the latter placing two thermocouple circuits inside one sheath.
  • Dimensional system — standard (inch) diameters such as XL-K-MO-010 and XL-K-MO-250 versus metric (mm) diameters such as XL-K-MO-0.5MM and XL-K-MO-3.0MM.

As sheath diameter increases from the smallest through the largest offering, the wall thickness and conductor diameter increase correspondingly while the cable's resistance per unit length decreases, so diameter selection trades mechanical robustness against response and installation flexibility.

Key Product Differences

Models follow the ordering structure XL-[x]-MO-[size]-[**], where the calibration character is set to K for Type K or N for Type N, the size denotes the sheath diameter, and the trailing field specifies length — in feet for standard models or in meters for metric models. For example, XL-K-MO-125-250 designates 250' of 0.125" diameter Type K cable.

Standard-dimension diameters are cataloged as XL-[x]-MO-010, XL-[x]-MO-020, XL-[x]-MO-032, XL-[x]-MO-040, XL-[x]-MO-062, XL-[x]-MO-125, XL-[x]-MO-188, XL-[x]-MO-250, and XL-[x]-MO-313. Metric-dimension diameters run from the 0.25 mm size through the 8.0 mm size, ordered as codes such as XL-K-MO-0.5MM and XL-K-MO-3.0MM.

Each diameter can be combined with the Type K or Type N calibration and, where offered, with the SLE and DUAL options, yielding single- and dual-conductor cables in both inch and metric series. Cable is available from stock, cut to length or in long continuous lengths, and PST Series strippers are offered for preparing OMEGACLAD XL cable ends.

How long are these TCs? Is this per foot, per inch...? Is it just wire? Is one end welded at a TC? What are you selling/what am I buying?

Asked by: DanAZ
This is thermocouple wire in a metal sheath that is sold by the foot. It does not come with finished or welded end.

What is the total length? How long is it??? (XL Sheath Mineral Insulated Thermocouple Wire, K type, Dia: 1mm, Chromel-Alumel)

Asked by: CAhn
Thank you for your inquiry CAhn. There is no pre determined length of this wire since it is sold by foot/meter depending on the units. For example, qty of 1 = 1 foot/meter of the wire.
