Supported Applications

The Omega WMS Series Wind Monitor Stations are designed for monitoring wind speed and direction. The series includes models configured as dual setpoint wind alarms with microprocessor-based control, audible alerts, relay outputs, and LCD displays (WMS-21), or as analog output monitors providing 4 to 20 mA signals proportional to measured parameters.

Documented measurement functions include:

  • Dual setpoint wind alarm monitoring with independent setpoints
  • Wind speed monitoring from 0 to 100 mph
  • Combined wind speed and direction (azimuth) monitoring from 0 to 360°

Operating Conditions & Performance

The WMS Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -40 to 40°C (-40 to 104°F). The electronics enclosure for the WMS-23 and WMS-23S models is rated for this environment, while the WMS-21 model specifies a narrower operating temperature of -20 to 50°C (-4 to 122°F) in its specification table.

Performance specifications vary by sensor type:

  • Wind Speed Accuracy: 1 mph or ±3% (whichever is larger)
  • Azimuth Accuracy: ±3°
  • Resolution: 0.1 mph for speed measurements
  • Circuit Time Constant: 1 sec response time
  • Current Loop Accuracy: ±1% full scale
  • Threshold Speeds: 1 mph (WMS-23/WMS-23S), 0.8 mph (speed threshold for WMS-23 direction function)

The transducer technology includes a sealed magnetic switch or reed switch depending on the model configuration.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable outputs and housing options to meet specific monitoring needs. All units are housed in gasketed wall mount NEMA enclosures constructed with UV-resistant ABS plastic and anodized aluminum components for outdoor durability.

  • Output Signals:
    • Dual setpoint relay control (SPDT contacts rated 3A at 24 Vdc/115 Vac) with audible alarm
    • Single 4 to 20 mA loop proportioned to 0 to 100 mph
    • Dual 4 to 20 mA loops, one for speed (0 to 100 mph) and one for direction (0 to 360°)
  • Power Supply: 8 to 30 Vdc; WMS-21 also supports 12 Vac or dc with a maximum of 50 mA.
  • Cabling: Includes a standard 12 m (40') cable. An optional extension cable, model WMS-EC-40, provides an additional 12 m (40').
  • Housing Dimensions:
    • Anemometer: 114 H x 216 mm W (4.5 x 8.5")
    • Electronics Enclosure (WMS-23/WMS-23S): 120 x 120 x 57 mm D (4.7 x 4.7 x 2.25")
    • Electronics Enclosure (WMS-21): 120 H x 198 W x 89 mm D (4.7 x 7.8 x 3.5")
  • Mounting: The WMS-21 supports mounting on a 27 mm (1.062") OD pipe (¾" IPS).

Key Product Differences

The series is differentiated by model number based on output type and measurement scope:

  • WMS-21: A dual setpoint wind station featuring a microprocessor-based alarm system, audible alarm, relay control at two independent setpoints (adjustable delay 0 to 99 sec), LEDs for alarm points, and a 2-line x 16-character LCD display.
  • WMS-23S: A wind speed monitor providing a single 4 to 20 mA output proportioned to the 0 to 100 mph range. It utilizes a reed switch transducer with a 0.8 mph speed threshold.
  • WMS-23: A combined wind speed and direction monitor offering dual 4 to 20 mA outputs (speed and azimuth). The anemometer/vane assembly measures 305 H x 254 mm W (12 x 10") and includes a potentiometer gap of 5° with bushing bearings.

Is the WMS-23 comparable with the VersaLog VL-WF-TC data logger?

Asked by: Trevor42
Thank you for your inquiry about the wind speed sensor. If the VL-WF-TC logger accepts a process or analog input, then, yes, it will.

I have an application that I would like to use a single anemometer with set wind speed & using relay contacts to send signal if speed is reached to 2 separate controllers. Is that possible with WMS-20 series product?

Asked by: JoeV
Thank you for your inquiry on this product. The WMS-21 wind station has dual setpoints to change states on a relay if the wind speed exceeds your desire set point.

How many times per second can the WMS-23 record wind speed and wind direction values to the data logger?

Asked by: Trevor42
Thank you for your inquiry! The output is a proportional 4-20 mA output and therefore the recording interval will depend on the specific data logger being used

What is the sampling frequency for this sensor? Is it capable of recording wind speed and direction values once ever second? (1Hz)

Asked by: Trevor42
Thank you for your inquiry for the wind speed sensor and it will record 1.25 MPH per 1 Hz.
