Supported Applications
AwTherm is a temperature-controlled water activity station from Rotronic used to determine the water activity of a sample held at a known, stabilized temperature. It is a professional, high-end laboratory unit built on the same forced-air technology as the Rotronic HygroGen2 temperature and humidity calibration suite, creating highly stable thermal conditions with minimal gradients for repeatable measurements.
The station is suited to the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries, where controlling water activity is important for product stability, safety, and shelf life. An 8-line LCD with touch operation guides the operator, and the reference measurement is made with a Rotronic HYGROMER IN-1 sensor, giving outstanding repeatability and long-term stability for laboratory quality control.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The AwTherm measures water activity over a range of 0.005...1.000 aw with an accuracy of ±0.005 aw (10...30 °C) and ±0.1 °C (±0.18 °F) on the temperature reading. The device operates under ambient conditions of 1...40 °C (34...107 °F) and provides a temperature control range of 0...60 °C (32...140 °F).
Thermal performance is a defining feature: temperature stability is ±0.01 °C/min (±0.018 °F/min) and the chamber-temperature gradient is ≤0.1 °C (≤0.18 °F). Long-term stability of the water activity reading is <0.01 aw/year. The temperature sensor is a Pt100, DIN 1/3 Class B element, and annual calibration is recommended.
The unit is powered from 110...230 V / 50...60 Hz with a current consumption of ≤2 A, and it connects to the HW4 software over a Micro USB interface (compatible with HW4 version 3.6.0 and higher) with an aw-Quick function and trend indicator. The enclosure is molded from PC / ABS, is rated IP21, measures 400 x 180 x 180 mm, and weighs 4200 g. The station conforms to ISO 18787, EMC 2004/108/EC, and IEC EN 61010-1:2010.
Configuration Options
The AwTherm is supplied with one of two sample cup holders, and this is the primary distinction between configurations. The difference is the sample container each accommodates: the PS-14 holder uses a container measuring Ø46 x 14 mm, while the PS-40 holder uses a deeper container measuring Ø46 x 40 mm.
Both configurations share identical measurement performance, temperature control, and interfaces; only the sample size that can be loaded differs. This lets the same instrument be matched to smaller or larger samples without changing its measurement or temperature-stabilization capabilities.
Key Product Differences
The source documentation does not include a model-number decomposition or ordering table; the station is identified by the sample cup holder it ships with. The two configurations are:
- PS-14 sample cup holder — uses the AwT-PS14 container, Ø46 x 14 mm.
- PS-40 sample cup holder — uses the AwT-PS40 container, Ø46 x 40 mm.
The standard supply package includes the AwTherm stabilized-temperature water activity meter with either the PS-14 or PS-40 sample cup holder, an HW4-P-Quick-V3 software code sticker, a Micro USB cable for connection to HW4, a Micro USB memory stick containing HW4 and the user manual, and power cables for UK or US/EU/CH. Aw and temperature adjustment is performed with the HG2-S standard (probe removed with the AwT-CAL fixture), and aw adjustment can also be made using Rotronic humidity standards via HW4.
