Supported Applications
The Series V8 Flotect® is a field-trimmable vane-type flow switch designed for clean, compatible process media free from scale, debris, and foreign material. The series provides actuation and deactuation based on flow rates in horizontal pipe runs ranging from 1 to 6 inches. It is utilized to protect unattended equipment from damage or loss of production.
Key operational constraints include:
- Pipe Orientation: Actuation/deactuation flow rates are based on horizontal pipe runs; the unit cannot be used with vertical downflow.
- Media Requirements: Clean, compatible gases or liquids. Buildup of scale or debris can impede vane movement and prevent proper operation.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series V8 operates under the following maximum conditions as documented in specification tables:
- Maximum Temperature: 212°F (100°C)
- Maximum Pressure: 150 psig (10.3 bar) or 150 psig (10.34 bar)
- Process Connection: 1" NPTM
Flow rate performance varies by pipe size and media type. For cold water, approximate actuation/deactuation rates range from 8.6/6.8 GPM (for a 1-1/2" pipe) up to 45/33 GPM for the lower end of a 6" pipe configuration, with upper ranges reaching 170.2/124.7 GPM in specific configurations. For air flow, rates range from approximately 39/32.6 SCFM (for a 1" pipe) up to 286.5/233.4 SCFM for the upper end of a 6" pipe configuration.
Configuration Options
The series offers configurable options regarding wetted materials, electrical contacts, and enclosure types to suit specific installation environments:
- Wetted Materials (Standard): Polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) for the vane and body; 316 stainless steel for pin and spring; Ceramic 8 magnet.
- Inconel® Alloy Option (-INC): Replaces standard 316 SS wetted parts with Inconel® alloy, ceramic 8, and polyphenylene sulfide.
- Electrical Contacts:
- Standard: SPDT snap switch rated at 5 A @ 125/250 VAC.
- MV Option (-MV): SPDT gold contact snap switch for dry circuits, rated 1A @ 125 VAC, 1A resistive, and 0.5A inductive @ 30 VDC (also listed as 0.1 A @ 125 VAC).
- Enclosure Options:
- Standard: General purpose.
- -WP Option: Weatherproof enclosure with phenylpolioxide housing; not UL approved.
- -WP2 Option: Weatherproof enclosure with aluminum housing; not UL approved. Features 1/2" female NPT conduit connection (standard is 1/2" male NPT).
Additional physical specifications include an overall length of 9.375 in (23.8 cm), a weight of 4.5 oz (128 g) or 0.13 kg, and wire leads of 18 AWG x 18 in (45.7 cm).
Key Product Differences
The Series V8 is distinguished by its field-trimmable vane design, which requires trimming at the mark corresponding to the pipe size being used. For standard 125–250 lb fittings, the instruction manual specifies trimming 0.125" above the mark.
Model variations are defined by suffix options added to the base model:
- V8: Standard flow switch with SPDT snap switch and general purpose housing.
- -INC Suffix: Indicates Inconel® alloy wetted parts for enhanced material compatibility.
- -MV Suffix: Indicates gold plated contacts suitable for dry circuits.
- -WP / -WP2 Suffixes: Indicate weatherproof enclosures with phenylpolioxide or aluminum housings, respectively. These options provide protection for electrical wiring but are not UL approved.
