Supported Applications

The Omega UW Series (including UWTC and UWRTD models) comprises compact, battery-powered wireless transmitters designed for stand-alone temperature monitoring. These devices transmit readings from thermocouple or RTD sensors to a host receiver up to 120 m (400 ft) away in outdoor line-of-sight conditions, with indoor/urban ranges reaching up to 45 m (130 ft). The system is intended for dry, moisture-free indoor applications only. Included software converts a PC into a multi-channel chart recorder or data logger.

Explicitly documented constraints include:

  • Prohibited Environments: Do not operate in flammable or explosive environments; do not use for medical or nuclear applications.
  • Installation Restrictions: Designed for permanent installation only, not as a portable device. No co-location with other radio transmitters is allowed within 20 cm. Units must be installed at least 20 cm apart and kept more than 20 cm from nearby persons during operation.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The UW Series supports a wide envelope of temperature measurement ranges depending on the selected sensor type, with an ambient operating environment specified as -10 °C to 70 °C (14 °F to 158 °F). The device features automatic cold junction compensation within this same range.

Measurement accuracy varies by input type:

  • Type J and K Thermocouples: ±0.5 % rdg or ±1.0 °C (1.8 °F), whichever is greater
  • Types T, E, and N Thermocouples: ±0.5 % rdg or ±2.0 °C (3.6 °F), whichever is greater
  • Types R, S, B, and C Thermocouples: ±0.5 % FS
  • Pt100 RTD: ±0.5 °C (1.0 °F)

The system provides a resolution of 1 °C/1 °F and transmits data via ISM 2.4 GHz direct sequence spread spectrum radio frequency (RF) using the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The RF output power for UWTC-2 and UWRTD-2 models is 10 dBm (10 mW). Data packets include thermocouple reading, connector ambient reading, RF transmit strength, and battery condition.

Measurement Ranges by Sensor Type

  • Type J: -100 °C to 760 °C (-148 °F to 1400 °F)
  • Type K: -100 °C to 1260 °C (-148 °F to 2300 °F)
  • Type T: -200 °C to 400 °C (-328 °F to 752 °F)
  • Type E: -200 °C to 1000 °C (-328 °F to 1832 °F)
  • Type R and S: 260 °C to 1760 °C (500 °F to 3200 °F)
  • Type B: 870 °C to 1820 °C (1598 °F to 3308 °F)
  • Type C: 0 °C to 2315 °C (32 °F to 4200 °F)
  • Type N: -100 °C to 1260 °C (-148 °F to 2300 °F)
  • Pt100 (0.00385 curve): -200 °C to 850 °C (-328 °F to 1562 °F)
  • Pt100 (0.00392 curve): -100 °C to 457 °C (-148 °F to 854 °F)

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable options for sensor input, housing style, and power configuration. The standard UWTC-2 and UWRTD-2 models utilize a universal female connector accepting both standard male (OSTW Series) or miniature male (SMPW Series) mating connectors for thermocouples, while the RTD version uses a Series "T" receptacle (type TA4M) with an included TA4F mating connector.

Power is supplied by one 3.6 V lithium battery with 2.4 Ah capacity (AA size), providing typical life of 1 year at a sample rate of 1 sample/minute @ 25 °C (77 °F). Alternative power configurations include Standard C 3.6V Lithium Battery Assembly for -NB9 or -NEMA versions, and external USB power is available.

Key configurable dimensions across the series envelope:

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Product but... I purchased this wireless thermometer to record temperatures and log them on the included software for our state health department requirements. I am happy with the quality of the unit but I am disappointed that I can't use the software because it doesn't work with our Windows 10 machine. The tech support said they haven't updated their software drivers to work with Windows 10 yet. Hopefully soon so I can start recording temperatures.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from One of two units failed. Our shop has 10 wireless Omega Sensors (two UWTC and 8 UWRH) 9 of them have worked very well for almost a year. The web configuration was a little crude (and for us the online plots don't work, but we don't need them). One sensor "failed" and was sent back to Omega. The first tech told me it worked on their system and he sent it back. When it arrived back (months later) I still could not read data from the sensor and scrapped it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for unusual application We are using this unit, here at The AG and Forestry Museum in Jackson MS, on a 1929 oil engine that operates the oldest operating cotton gin in the united states. The unit is mounted to the connecting rod barring inside the engine and rotates with the barring while the engine is running. This unit allows us to monitor engine vibrations and connecting rod barring temprature in real time, with a laptop computer, while we are ginning cotton. We have used this setup for several years with great success. Great product that has saves us from catastrophic engine failure of a engine that cant be replaced.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work anymore after 4 months I have not been able to use it after few month I bought it. I cannot etablish a connection the UWTC anymore. I have reach Omega, the gave me advices that did not work at all and ask me to send it back. It does not even come with a battery integrated. You have to buy the battery separately and it uses a 3.6V AA battery which is very hard to find. Why not using a standard AA 1.5V battery? Moreover the product seems to work on a very old technologies and have not been updated since a while. I would NOT recommend this product, I find out competitors product that use standard 1.5V battery and that does not need the receiver, and you can even plug 2 thermocouples on it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well in a Tough Application We bought this as an experiment for use in a rigorous tire testing application. Even after being exposed to high levels of vibration and about 1500 RPM rotation many times, the unit still works and is calibrated. I couldn't be more impressed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rotational Plastic Molds The wireless thermocouple works great for our quality department using a rotational plastic molder to expand our testing. It is a simple product that makes it easy to read the temperature inside the mold. The only problem we have is the connecting wires are very thin, and have problems with breaking, or coming loose. Only other problem we have had in the past is, if we let the battery sit in the thermocouple it will go dead faster, so we remove it each time.

Hi there, What are the power consumption values for this sensor in active and sleep modes? is it possible to program this for a low power consumption?

Asked by: Jems
Hello, thank you for your question. There is no need for program it as the unit comes standard with low power consumption setup. The only option to save battery is to turn it off when not in use. Specific power consumption values are not available. Many factors affect battery life like environment conditions and transmission rates, but typical battery life is 3 years at 1 sample/minute reading rate @ 25°C.

Is this device able to read out temperature even if the thermocouple is connected to a high common mode voltage (~1-2 kV)?

Asked by: Dajo
Hi, thanks for connecting with Omega. The UWTC-2 is only designed for t/c signals which are equivalent to dc millivolts. High voltages of this magnitude would certainly damage the unit. Please email us at das@omega.com with any further questions. Thank you.
