Supported Applications

The Omega D8000 Series USB Data Acquisition Interface Modules are a family of complete data acquisition systems designed for process control applications. These modules support analog and digital I/O, featuring a USB interface that connects to a host computer to create a virtual serial port using the Modbus RTU protocol. The series is intended for use in process monitoring and control, data logging, and product testing.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The D8000 Series modules operate within an ambient temperature range of -25 to 70°C (-13 to 158°F) with a storage temperature range of -25 to 85°C (-13 to 185°F). Humidity ratings are specified as 0 to 95% RH non-condensing. The modules utilize an unregulated power supply of 10 to 30 Vdc.

Performance specifications vary by model type:

 • Analog Input Resolution: 16-bit ADC for voltage, current, and thermocouple inputs (D8100–D8400).
 • Analog Output Resolution: 12-bit DAC resolution with an update rate of 250 conversions per second.
 • Digital I/O Update Rate: Digital outputs operate at a 4.5 Hz update rate.

Accuracy specifications for the series include ±0.05% of FS max, ±1.5°C max (J, K, T, E thermocouples), and ±3.5°C max (R, S, B, C thermocouples). The D8500 analog output module specifies an accuracy of ±0.1%. All user-selectable features are stored in nonvolatile EEPROM.

Configuration Options

The series encompasses a range of modules covering differential voltage inputs, current inputs, thermocouple inputs, combined input types, analog outputs, and digital I/O. The housing is constructed from ABS thermoplastic rated UL-94-5VA.

Input Modules (D8100–D8400)

The series includes 7-channel differential modules for specific or combined measurement types:

 • D8100: Differential voltage inputs with selectable ranges including ±0.025V, ±0.05V, ±0.1V, ±1V, ±5V, and ±10V.
 • D8200: Differential current input module for ±20 mA signals.
 • D8300: Differential thermocouple inputs supporting types J, K, T, E, R, S, B, and C with ranges from -200 to 760°C (-328 to 400°F) up to 0 to 2315°C (32 to 4199°F).
 • D8400: A combined module offering differential voltage, thermocouple, and current inputs with specifications equal to the D8100, D8200, and D8300 series.

Analog Output Module (D8500)

The D8500 provides two analog outputs programmable for voltage or current:

 • Voltage Ranges: 0 to 10 Vdc, ±10 Vdc.
 • Current Ranges: 0 to 20 mA, 4 to 20 mA.
 • Isolation & Protection: Features 500 Vac isolation (output common to system ground) and current output burnout protection up to 250 Vac. Voltage output drive is limited to 5 mA max with a settling time of 1 mS to 0.1% FS.

Digital I/O Modules (D8710, D8720)

 • D8710: Provides 15 digital inputs with internal 10K pull-up resistors. Logic "0" is defined as <1 Vdc and logic "1" as >3.5 Vdc, accepting direct switch closure.
 • D8720: Offers 15 open-collector outputs rated to 30 Vdc at 100 mA max with short circuit protection up to 500 mA and a saturation voltage (Vsat) of +0.3 Vdc max at 100 mA.

Both digital modules feature 500 Vac isolation between the I/O common and system ground. Electrical connections are made via screw terminal barrier plugs supplied with the module.

Key Product Differences

The D8000 Series is differentiated by function-specific model numbers:

 • D8100, D8200, D8300: Dedicated single-function input modules for voltage, current, and thermocouple respectively.
 • D8400: A multi-input module combining the capabilities of the dedicated models into a single unit with 7 differential channels configurable as voltage, thermocouple, or current inputs.
 • D8500: Dedicated analog output module supporting two programmable outputs (voltage or current).
 • D8710, D8720: Digital input and digital output modules providing 15-bit I/O capabilities with specific logic levels and protection ratings.

The series supports DIN rail mounting via the optional DMK-1 kit. Communication is handled through a USB interface cable (OCW-1, 0.9 m / 3') which creates a virtual serial port for Modbus RTU communication with commercial data acquisition programs or host computers running Windows operating systems.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Quality I'm really happy to have one and I need more... but unfortunately it's very hard to find OMEGA products in IRAN

I have a 4-20mA three-wire Omega LVIT - will this interface work with that? I assume the LVIT (+) would go to a CH (+) but I don't understand what would go in the CH (-) side. Would the LVIT and this share the same power supply or do I need one for each?

Asked by: DanP
I tried to email the DAS team and have not received a response. I have a 4-20mA Omega LVIT (Item#: LDI-619-015-A020S), which is a 3-wire. Red, black, and green (also a white for calibration). I also have a D8200 USB Interface, which I’m (hopefully) using to connect the sensor to my PC and then to DASYLAB. However, the D8200 has a (+) and (-) terminal for each channel. I’m assuming that the green wire (+ signal) for the LVIT goes to the (+) terminal of CH1 and nothing is attached to the (-) terminal? Or should I shunt the (-) terminal to the GRD terminal? Additionally, I have an adjustable 30V regulated DC power supply that I am running at 20V. Can one power supply be used to both provide the excitation voltage to the LVIT (red and black wires) AND the power to the D8200 (GRD and VS)? Or do I need two separate power supplies? I was supposed to have the system I’m working on fully operational by now for work but am really struggling. Any expedient advice is GREATLY appreciated.

What compatible software from Omega can be purchased to fit this product?

Asked by: Yandq
Hello, thank you for your question. Complimentary Utility Software is included with each module. The software is compatible with Windows operating systems and distributed on CDROM. The Utility Software simplifies configuration of all user selectable options such as device address, baud rate and filtering constants. The latest version of our software is always available on our web site. Besides the utility software, we don't have any other program design for this unit. The D8000 series USB interface modules connect to a host computer using a USB interface cable and they communicate using a virtual serial communications port using the Modbus RTU protocol. The Modbus RTU protocol is used to read and write data values to the D8000 series modules. The Modbus RTU protocol is a serial protocol and communicates with external devices through serial ports. The Modbus RTU protocol is widely recognized throughout the data acquisition industry and is supported by almost all commercial process control programs.

I cannot find this utility software anywhere for the D8100 series. I found software for D6000 series but when I try to select the correct module type the D8100 doesn't show up and so I cannot use this software.

Is it possible to connect an S-Beam load cell with 2mv/V output?

Asked by: jodol
Thank you for your question. The correct model for the load cell is D8100. Make sure you power the load cell per specification because D8100 does not provide excitation.
