Supported Applications
The Dwyer Series ULS (models ULSS, ULSM, and ULSL) provides non-contact, continuous ultrasonic level measurement for fluids in small to medium-sized tanks. Designed as a replacement for float, conductance, and pressure sensors that fail due to contact with dirty, sticking, or scaling media, the series is applied in skid, machine, tool, and process applications.
The general purpose sensors offer single and multi-function capabilities including measurement, switching, and control. The Series ULS is not designed for operation when immersed; it must be mounted so the enclosure and transducer do not contact application media under normal conditions. Additionally, these units are not intended for use within classified hazardous environments.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series covers three distinct measurement ranges: ULSS-10 at 49.2" (1.25m), ULSM-10 at 9.8' (3.0m), and ULSL-10 at 18.0' (5.5m). Accuracy varies by model, with the ULSS specified at 0.125" (3mm) and both ULSM and ULSL rated at +/- 0.2% of range.
Resolution is defined as 0.019" (0.5mm) for ULSS, 0.039" (1mm) for ULSM, and 0.079" (2mm) for ULSL. The sensors feature automatic temperature compensation across a process temperature range of 20° to 140°F (-7° to 60°C). Ambient operating temperatures span -31° to 140°F (-35° to 60°C).
Performance parameters include selectable dead bands (blind zones) of 2" (5cm) for ULSS, 4" (10cm) for ULSM, and 8" (20cm) for ULSL. Beam widths are listed as 2" (5cm) diameter for ULSS and ULSM, and 3" (7.6cm) for ULSL. The maximum working pressure is rated at MWP = 30 PSI.
Configuration Options
The series supports configurable outputs including a two-wire 4-20 mA signal that can be inverted to 20-4 mA. Fail-safe options allow the output to hold last, or default to 4 mA, 20 mA, 21 mA, or 22 mA upon fault conditions.
Electrical connections utilize a 9-conductor shielded cable with a polyurethane jacket (length: 48" / 1.2 m). Power requirements are met by a 12-28 VDC supply with a maximum loop resistance of 400 Ohms.
Process connections vary by model size:
- ULSS & ULSM: 1" NPT (1" G)
- ULSL: 2" NPT (2" G)
The enclosure is constructed of Polycarbonate with a Type 6P encapsulated rating, providing corrosion resistance and submersibility equivalent to IP68. Wetted materials include a Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) transducer and an FKM gasket.
Key Product Differences
The series is differentiated by range capability and physical dimensions:
- ULSS-10: Short-range model with a 49.2" (1.25m) span, overall height of 3.20" (81 mm), body diameter of 2.70" (69 mm), and thread length of 0.89" (23 mm).
- ULSM-10: Medium-range model with a 9.8' (3.0m) span, overall height of 3.4" (86 mm), body diameter of 2.7" (68 mm), and thread length of 3.06" (78 mm).
- ULSL-10: Long-range model with an 18.0' (5.5m) span, overall height of 3.4" (86 mm), body diameter of 2.7" (68 mm), and thread length of 3.06" (78 mm).
Configuration is performed via ULSX-CAL® PC software using a USB Fob accessory (Part# ULS-ACC-USB). Additional accessories include various PVC reducer bushing fittings (sch. 40 and sch. 80) in sizes ranging from 2" x 1" to 4" x 2", as well as polypropylene side mount brackets for 1" NPT and 2" NPT connections.
