Supported Applications
The Dwyer Series ULS (Models ULSS, ULSM, and ULSL) provides non-contact, continuous ultrasonic level measurement for fluids in small to medium-sized tanks. Designed as a general-purpose sensor family, the series replaces float, conductance, and pressure sensors that may fail due to contact with dirty, sticking, or scaling media. The sensors are applied in skid, machine, tool, and process applications where non-contact monitoring is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series ULS operates within a process temperature range of 20° to 140°F (-7° to 60°C) with automatic temperature compensation. Ambient operating temperatures span -31° to 140°F (-35° to 60°C). The sensors feature an NEMA 6P (IP68) encapsulated enclosure rating, providing corrosion resistance and submersibility up to a maximum working pressure of 30 psi (2 bar).
Performance specifications vary by model range:
- ULSS: Range 4.1' (1.25 m), Accuracy 0.125" (3 mm), Resolution 0.019" (0.5 mm)
- ULSM: Range 9.8' (3 m), Accuracy ±0.2% of range, Resolution 0.039" (1 mm)
- ULSL: Range 18' (5.5 m), Accuracy ±0.2% of range, Resolution 0.079" (2 mm)
The series supports a power supply of 12-28 VDC with a maximum loop resistance of 400 Ω max.
Configuration Options
The Series ULS offers configurable outputs and mounting options to accommodate specific installation needs. The sensors provide a two-wire 4-20 mA output signal, which is invertible (4-20 mA or 20-4 mA). Fail-safe configurations include fixed values of 4 mA, 20 mA, 21 mA, 22 mA, or the ability to hold the last value.
Additional capabilities and options include:
- Contact Outputs: Four SPST relays with a rating of 60 VA, 1A maximum. Relay fail-safe modes allow holding the last state on power loss; upon power-on, contacts can be set to open, close, or hold last.
- Hysteresis/Deadband: Selectable settings including no hysteresis, 1/4", 1/2", 1", 1/2 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm, and 5 cm (or not available).
- Process Connections: ULSS and ULSM models feature a 1" NPT (1" G) connection; the ULSL model features a 2" NPT (2" G) connection. A 1" BSPP process connection is listed as an optional configuration.
- Mounting Accessories: Available accessories include PVC reducer bushings for various pipe sizes and schedules, polypropylene side mount brackets, and USB adaptors for calibration via PC software (ULSX-CAL®).
The sensor housing is constructed of Polycarbonate with a TPE strain relief gland. The transducer material is Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF), and the mount gasket/O-ring is FKM.
Key Product Differences
Differences within the Series ULS are defined by measurement range, accuracy type, dead band size, beam width, and process connection thread size:
- ULSS-10: Short-range model with a 4.1' (1.25 m) maximum range, 2" (5 cm) dead band, 2" (5 cm) diameter beam width, and 1" NPT process connection.
- ULSM-10: Medium-range model with a 9.8' (3.0 m) maximum range, 4" (10 cm) dead band, 2" (5 cm) diameter beam width, and 1" NPT process connection.
- ULSL-10: Long-range model with an 18.0' (5.5 m) maximum range, 8" (20 cm) dead band, 3" (7.6 cm) diameter beam width, and 2" NPT process connection.
