Supported Applications
The Omega TFD series comprises Thin Film Detector (TFD) Platinum resistance detectors designed for surface temperature measurement. The flat sensor design combines the precision of a platinum RTD with rapid response characteristics, making it suitable for gaseous environments such as wind tunnels and air conditioners.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The TFD series operates within a process temperature range of -70 to 500°C (-95 to 930°F). The probe assembly maximum temperature is rated at 260°C (500°F). Resistance values and tolerances comply with DIN 43760 and BS 1904 ratings for Pt100 Ω elements. Response time performance varies by medium: in water moving at 0.4 m/s, t(50%) is 0.25 s and t(90%) is 1.1 s; in air moving at 1 m/s, t(50%) is 13.5 s and t(90%) is 55 s.
Self-heating error at 20°C (70°F) is documented as 1.9 mW/°C in still air and 75 mW/°C in still water. The device exhibits a maximum hysteresis of 0.25 observed only after rapid temperature cycling. Insulative resistance exceeds 10⁸ Ω at 500°C (930°F), with a voltage necessary for destruction rated at 100 Vdc.
Configuration Options
The series is offered as both the TFD element and the surface mount probe configuration. The sensor features an encapsulated, screw-mounted brass housing with PFA insulated leads. Wetted materials include platinum wire, a ceramic substrate, and PFA insulation.
- Wire Configuration: Available in 2-wire, 3-wire, or 4-wire configurations.
- Cable Lengths: Standard lengths are provided (e.g., 1 m / 40"). For lead wire lengths over 1 m (40"), additional increments of 300 mm (12") may be specified by modifying the model number.
- Connectors: Stripped lead wires are standard; optional connectors and termination options are available for operation with OMEGA handheld meters or other instruments.
The TFD element dimensions are 2.0 mm (0.078 in) height, 10 mm (0.39 in) width, and 10 mm (0.39 in) length. The TFD-ENB probe features a diameter of 3.18 mm (0.125 in) with an overall length of 600 mm (24 in).
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between the bare element and the assembled surface mount probe:
- TFD Element: The thin film RTD sensor component supplied without a pre-assembled cable or housing.
- TFD-ENB Probe: A complete assembly featuring the TFD element in a screw-mounted brass housing with PFA insulated leads. Model numbers follow the format TFD-ENB-<WIRE_COUNT>-<CABLE_LENGTH>, where wire count is 2, 3, or 4 wires and cable length corresponds to inches (e.g., TFD-ENB-3W-189 indicates a 3-wire sensor with an 180" cable).
