Supported Applications

The Dwyer Mother Node™ Series-350 Communication Signal Converters enable PCs to communicate with half-duplex RS-485 devices. These converters eliminate complicated handshaking issues by converting signals between RS-232 and RS-485 standards at baud rates up to 19.2 Kbaud.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates with a power supply of 12 VDC, available with an optional 120 VAC adaptor. Electrical connections utilize a DB9F connector for RS-232 and quick-connect interfaces for RS-485 wiring.

Configuration Options

The Mother Node™ line offers three levels of sophistication to match specific feature requirements:

  • Silver Converter (Model 351): A low-cost device for basic RS-232 to RS-485 conversion. Installation requires connecting two RS-485 wires, a quick-connect RS-232 cable, and the power transformer with no additional settings.
  • Gold Converter (Model 352): Adds optical isolation and an additional quick-connect RJ-11 RS-485 output to the Silver features.
  • Platinum Converter: Operates as either a converter or an RS-485 repeater. In repeater mode, it reforms and repeats waveforms to extend network capacity beyond standard limits.

The Platinum model can be configured for repeater operation by removing power, opening the cover, moving the J5 jumper from A to B, and replacing the cover. When used with Love Controls products featuring Option 992, a single port can address up to 1020 devices.

Physical Dimensions

The series is available in three housing sizes corresponding to the Silver, Gold, and Platinum models:

  • Silver: A: 109.5 mm (4.312 in), B: 61.9 mm (2.437 in), C: 61.9 mm (2.437 in), D: 84.1 mm (3.312 in)
  • Gold: A: 139.7 mm (5.500 in), B: 84.1 mm (3.312 in), C: 34.9 mm (1.375 in), D: 114.3 mm (4.500 in)
  • Platinum: A: 188.1 mm (6.562 in), B: 98.4 mm (3.875 in), C: 31.8 mm (1.250 in), D: 139.7 mm (5.500 in)

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between models lies in signal isolation and network extension capabilities. The Silver model provides basic conversion without optical isolation or repeater functionality. The Gold model introduces optical isolation and an RJ-11 output port. The Platinum model uniquely supports a configurable repeater mode via the J5 jumper, allowing it to extend RS-485 cable runs by 1800m (6000 ft.) and add support for an additional 32 devices beyond the standard limit of 32.
