Supported Applications

The Omega OMDC-MD Plus Series consists of field-programmable, closed-loop DC drive systems designed for motion control needs. These microprocessor-based units utilize a velocity-form PID algorithm to function as digital speed controllers, time-based process controllers, or ratiometric follower controllers in master-slave configurations. The series is documented for use in metering pump applications and volume OEM Adjustable Speed Drive scenarios requiring specialized inputs and outputs.

Documented application areas include:

  • Water and Waste Treatment Systems
  • Conveyor Oven Controllers
  • Synchronized Conveyor Lines

Operating Conditions & Performance

The OMDC-MD Plus Series operates within an ambient temperature range of -10 to 45°C (14 to 113°F). The units feature a universal power supply accepting line voltage inputs from 85-265 Vac @ 50-60Hz, automatically adjusting without switches or jumpers. Transient voltage protection is included to prolong unit life in harsh industrial environments.

Performance specifications include:

  • Control Accuracy: ±1/2 RPM of set speed or equivalent (per manual); 4-20 mA signal accuracy specified as ±1% (per data sheet).
  • Memory: Non-volatile memory stores settings without batteries, even when power is removed.

Variants and Ratings

The series supports DC motors up to 2 HP. Specific model capabilities are defined by the following parameters found in the ordering table:

  • OMDC-MD40P-420 (¼ DIN panel mount): Max Arm DC Amps: 5; Max HP: ½ or 1 depending on input voltage.
  • OMDC-MD50P-420 (¼ DIN panel mount): Max Arm DC Amps: 10; Max HP: 1 or 2 depending on input voltage.
  • OMDC-MD50E-420 (Stand-alone enclosure): Max Arm DC Amps: 10; Max HP: 1 or 2 depending on input voltage.

Input voltages of 120 Vac correspond to a motor output range of 0 to 90 Vdc, while 240 Vac inputs support an output range of 0 to 180 Vdc. The enclosure rating is NEMA 4X (IP66) for the stand-alone and panel mount configurations.

Signal Inputs and Outputs

The system features isolated 4-20 mA input and output signals for integration with process control systems. It includes two field-programmable Form C relay contacts to indicate conditions such as pump running or fault status. Compatible signal inputs include Hall-Effect Pickups, Photoelectric sensors, TTL, and Open collector devices capable of sinking at least 3mA. A self-contained power supply provides up to 5V @ 50mA for external pickups.

Configuration Options

The OMDC-MD Plus Series offers configurable dimensions across panel mount and stand-alone enclosure options, with electrical connections via European-style 5mm terminal blocks or optional pluggable connectors. The housing is constructed from durable aluminum rated NEMA 4/4X (IP66) with a Polycarbonate membrane and gasket.

Key configurable features include:

  • Housing Styles: ¼ DIN panel mount (MD40P, MD50P) or Stand-alone enclosure (MD50E).
  • I/O Expansion: ModularBus expansion slot architecture supports specialized cards such as the OPT420 optically-isolated 4-20mA I/O card.
  • Sensor Options: Optional OMDC-PU-40E shaft-mounted pick-up sensor providing 20 pulses per revolution.

The units are factory or field programmable via a front-panel keypad. Adjustable settings include min/max limits, acceleration/deceleration rates, display options, and alarm configurations. An internal program-enable jumper selectively prevents tampering with the unit's configuration.

Key Product Differences

The series is distinguished by physical form factor and power handling capacity:

  • MD40P Models (Panel Mount): Designed for ¼ DIN panel cut-outs with dimensions of 3.622" width x 1.770" height and a depth of 4.625".
  • MD50P Models (Panel Mount): Larger ¼ DIN footprint requiring a 3.622" width x 3.622" height cut-out with the same 4.625" depth; supports higher current loads up to 10 Amps.
  • MD50E Models (Stand-alone): Enclosed units measuring approximately 140 W x 188 H x 70 mm D, providing a self-contained solution for the same motor ratings as the MD50P panel mount version.

All listed variants include cULus approval pending and RoHS compliance. The series supports multiple operating modes including Master Rate Mode (controlling in engineering units such as RPM or Gallons per Second), Master Time Mode, and Follower Mode for precise synchronization with a master process.
