Supported Applications

The OS-PC Series is a non-contact infrared temperature sensor with built-in LED sighting, capable of measuring a spot as small as 1.6 mm in diameter. It functions by detecting infrared radiation emitted from a surface, making it well suited to fast-moving or very small targets that cannot be reached with contact probes.

The compact cube sensor is used across a broad set of materials and processes, including:

  • Paper, textiles and cable lines.
  • Thick plastics, rubber and painted surfaces.
  • Food and ceramics.
  • Electronic components and some metals.

An optional OS-PC-TSD touch screen interface module adds standalone indication, configuration, alarm handling and data logging, and further accessories adapt the sensor to demanding installations: the OS-PC-FBN fixed mounting bracket, the OS-PC-PWC protective lens cover, the OS-PC-APC air purge collar and the OS-PC-ADP airless dust protector.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The sensor measures over a temperature range of 0 to 500°C (0 to 932°F). A red LED is built in as standard on all models to show the position and size of the measured spot, and can be switched on or off.

Key performance figures include:

  • Response time from 10 ms on standard models and as fast as 1 ms on F models, with an adjustable averaging function up to 5 s.
  • Measurement accuracy of ±3°C (±5.4°F) or 1%, whichever is greater.
  • Repeatability of ±0.5°C (0.9°F) and resolution of <0.5°C (0.9°F).
  • Emissivity adjustable from 0.3 to 1.0 via RS232C or the optional touch screen interface.

Ambient reference conditions for the specifications are 23 ± 5°C, emissivity 1.0 and an averaging time of 50 ms. The sensor is powered from 5 to 27 V DC at 100 mA max and communicates over RS232C Modbus RTU, non-isolated.

Environmentally, the sensor carries an IP67 rating, operates at an ambient of 0 to 50°C (32 to 122°F), stores at -15 to 70°C (5 to 158°F) and tolerates 30 to 85% RH non-condensing. It weighs 85 g (3 oz) without cable. Compliance covers CE along with the EMC standards EN61326-1:2013, CISPR 11:2009, IEC61000-4-2, IEC61000-4-3, IEC61000-4-4, IEC61000-4-5 and IEC61000-4-6.

Configuration Options

The lineup is organised by optics and response time. The measured spot size and the distance at which it is achieved distinguish the models from one another:

  • OS-PC16 optics focus a 1.6 mm spot at 35 mm distance with a response of 10 ms.
  • OS-PC30 optics focus a 3.0 mm spot at 70 mm distance with a response of 10 ms.
  • OS-PC55 optics focus a 5.5 mm spot at 120 mm distance with a response of 10 ms.
  • OS-PCF35 optics focus a 3.5 mm spot at 100 mm distance with a response of 1 ms.
  • OS-PCF70 optics focus a 7.0 mm spot at 200 mm distance with a response of 1 ms.

Standard versus fast response

Standard (-S) and fast (-F) sensors differ in more than speed. -S models deliver measurement accuracy of ±3°C or 1%, repeatability of ±0.5°C and resolution below 0.5°C. -F models offer accuracy of ±3.5°C or 1%, repeatability of ±1°C and resolution of <1.5°C (0 to 50°C) or <0.7°C (above 50°C), in exchange for their 1 ms response.

Analog output and cable options

Every sensor provides 4-20 mA set by default, plus 0-20 mA and mV/°C outputs, and a selectable voltage output of 0 to 1 V DC, 0 to 5 V DC or 0 to 10 V DC chosen through the voltage output option code (1V, 5V, 10V). One open drain alarm output is rated 27 V DC at 0.2 A. Cable length is selectable as 2M, 5M or 10M.

Key Product Differences

Sensor models

Each sensor is ordered as OS-PC followed by the optics/response code, cable length and voltage output option, for example OS-PC16-2M-1V. The high speed cube sensors are:

  • OS-PC16-2M — 10 mS response, 1.6 mm spot @ 35 mm, with 2 m (6.6') cable.
  • OS-PC30-2M — 10 mS response, 3.0 mm spot @ 70 mm, with 2 m (6.6') cable.
  • OS-PC55-2M — 10 mS response, 5.5 mm spot @ 120 mm, with 2 m (6.6') cable.
  • OS-PCF35-2M — very fast cube sensor, 1 mS response, 3.5 mm spot @ 100 mm, with 2 m (6.6') cable.
  • OS-PCF70-2M — very fast cube sensor, 1 mS response, 7.0 mm spot @ 200 mm, with 2 m (6.6') cable.

Touch screen interface module

The OS-PC-TSD adds a 72 mm (2.83") resistive touch TFT display at 320 x 240 pixels. It logs to an optional MicroSD card up to 32 GB with a sample interval from 1 second to 1 day, offers two alarm relay outputs rated 24 V DC at 1 A plus a retransmitted analogue output, and uses one BR 1225 3 V internal clock battery (not included). Its retransmitted outputs include 0 to 1 V DC and mV/°C with an effective minimum of 30 mV and accuracy of ±1.5 mV, and 0 to 20 mA and 4 to 20 mA with accuracy of ±0.02 mA.

Options and accessories

  • OS-PC-TSD — touch screen display with data logging.
  • OS-PC-FBN — fixed mounting bracket (1-axis).
  • OS-PC-PWC — protective lens cover.
  • OS-PC-APC — air purge collar.
  • OS-PC-ADP — airless dust protector.
