Supported Applications

The Omega MP Series consists of heavy-duty magnetic mount thermocouples designed to measure the surface temperature of ferrous materials. These probes feature a spring-mounted sensor element that ensures consistent contact with the target surface.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series is available in Type J, K, E, and T calibrations. Standard lead wires are 1 m (40") SS overbraided glass insulated wire; PFA insulated wire is an optional configuration. The probes utilize a subminiature male connector with a write-on window and include a cable clamp.

Magnet pull force specifications for the series:

  • MP1: Single magnet, 53 Newton (12 lb) pull
  • MP2: Dual magnets, 53 Newton (12 lb) pull per magnet

Configuration Options

The MP Series offers configurable options for sensor grounding and lead wire insulation to accommodate specific installation needs.

  • Sensor Grounding: Standard grounded configuration; ungrounded option available by adding the "-UNGROUND" suffix (additional cost).
  • Lead Wire Insulation: Standard SS overbraid glass insulated wire. Optional PFA insulated lead wires are ordered by adding the "-TT" suffix to the model number.

The series includes two primary housing configurations with distinct dimensions as documented in the specifications table:

  • MP1 (Single-magnet probe): 25 H x 38 W x 25 mm D (1.0 x 1.5 x 1.0")
  • MP2 (Dual-magnet probe with handle): 108 H x 64 W x 25 mm D (4.3 x 2.5 x 1.5")

The model number format follows the pattern MP1-(-*)-36-SMPW-M or MP2-(-*)-36-SMPW-M, where "*" specifies the calibration type (J, K, E, or T).

Key Product Differences

The primary distinction between models in this series is the magnet configuration and physical dimensions:

  • Model MP1: A single-magnet probe designed for compact surface measurements.
  • Model MP2: A dual-magnet probe featuring a handle, providing increased stability or reach depending on application geometry.

The series documentation notes that smaller magnetic mount thermocouples are available as separate models (88401 and 88402).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised Works great. I didn't buy a female plug end, so I had to disassemble the male plug to gegget at the wires. Easily done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As described I bought two of these for field measurements on process piping and vessels. Although they don't appear to be built for frequent placement and removal, I expect that with care they will function well for my purpose.

Are both of these thermocouples able to be put inside a powder coating curing oven or will the wire casing deteriorate due to the elevated temperature?

Asked by: TDMEEE
The MP1 Thermocouple has a PFA coated wire good to 260C but were not sure if the powder coating particles will be able to get into the probe tube and cause problems. The MP2 lead wire is rated up to 480C and is fiberglass and stainless steel over braid so is porous. We don't have any data to provide in this type of application but it seems they should be okay for a period of time.

Is the probe removeable from the magnetic mount base? (So that it's temperature measurements can be verified using a metrology drywell)

Asked by: Hartman Walushka
Thank you for the inquiry. Unfortunately the probe was not set up to be removeable from the magnetic mount. Best regards, OMEGA

Is the stated process temperature range also applicable to the available connector options?

Asked by: rcde1
The process temperature is only for the magnet and Thermocouple sensor. The connectors are only rated to 356F.

Is the same wire used on this unit available by the roll?

Asked by: Jeff00
Thank you for asking your question. Yes, we do that that same wire available in rolls(spools). An example of that part number would be TT-J-24-SB-50.

it states temp range from 32-700 Deg F , do you have magnetic thermal couple for 1000 deg F rating ?

Asked by: Derick K
Thank you for your inquiry Derick K. Unfortunately, we do not offer a magnetic mount thermocouple with a maximum temperature of 1000 F. The maximum temperature for the Heavy-Duty Magnetic Mount Thermocouples is 700 F.

What's the response time on this item until it reads temperature accurately on a surface (not liquid)? For example: 5 seconds to full reading?

Asked by: cubsfanbrit
Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we do not have any test data around the response time of these sensors. The sensor design along with the minimal contact makes the magnetic mount sensors not very fast acting.
