Deionized and Demineralized Water Circulation Heater

  • Standard Element Sheath Materials
  • Incoloy® 800 — A Nickel (30 to 35%), Chromium (19 to 23%), Iron alloy. The high nickel content of this alloy contributes to its resistance to scaling and corrosion. Used in air heating (also see Incoloy® 840) and immersion heating of potable water and other liquids that are not corrosive to an Incoloy® 800 sheath.
  • Low Carbon Steel — Applications include fluid heat transfer media, tar, high to low viscosity petroleum oils, asphalt, wax, molten salt, and other solutions not corrosive to a steel sheath.
  • 316 Stainless Steel — A Chromium (16 to 18%), Nickel (11 to 14%), Iron Alloy with Molybdenum (2 to 3%) added to improve corrosion resistance in certain environments, especially those that would tend to cause pitting due to the presence of chlorides. Applications include deionized water.

Supported Applications

The Omega CHF Series consists of self-contained circulation heaters designed to transfer heat generated by elements directly to the medium being processed. The series supports two primary watt density configurations tailored for specific media:

  • Fuel Oils (Bunker C and Number 6): Configured at 8 watts/in² (1.3 watts/cm²).
  • Deionized Water, Demineralized Water: Configured at 60 watts/in² (9.3 watts/cm²).

The series is also documented for use with air heating, potable water, sterilizing solutions, organic and inorganic chemicals, clean water for washrooms/showers/rinse tanks, fluid heat transfer media, tar, petroleum oils, asphalt, wax, and molten salt.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The CHF Series vessel is constructed from SA53B or SA106B steel with a maximum operating temperature of 399°C (750°F). Element sheath temperatures are governed by the selected watt density and application. The unit features a stainless steel outer jacket protecting 25 mm (1") thick insulation.

Process connections vary by size: NPT pipe threads for units ranging from 76 to 203 mm (3 to 8"), and 150 lb rated flanges for 254 mm (10") and larger units. Optional stainless steel flanges or 300 lb ratings are available.

Electrical specifications include power supply options of 120V, 240V-1Ph, 240V-3Ph, 480V-1Ph, and 480V-3Ph. Flange heater elements are wired into branch circuits with a maximum current of 48 Amps.

Sheath Materials

  • Standard for 60 watts/in² models: 316 Stainless Steel.
  • Standard for 8 watts/in² models: Incoloy® 800, Low Carbon Steel, or Copper.
  • Optional sheath materials: 304 Stainless Steel, 321 Stainless Steel, Incoloy® 840, and Incoloy® 825.

Configuration Options

The CHF Series offers configurable terminal housings to meet environmental requirements:

  • NEMA 1 (General Purpose): Standard configuration with wiring diagram inside the housing.
  • NEMA 4 (Moisture Resistant): Optional moisture-proof housing.
  • NEMA 7 (Explosion Resistant): Optional explosion-resistant housing intended to provide containment of an explosion in the enclosure only.
  • NEMA 4/7: Combined Moisture and Explosion resistant option.

The series supports various control and protection options, including double-pole non-indicating bulb and capillary type thermostats, solid state temperature controllers, and over-temperature protection via thermocouple. Additional insulation or high temperature ceramic fiber insulation is available as an accessory.

Model Number Structure

The model number follows the format CHF. Examples include CHF01100 and CHF02005. Specific dimensions, weights (ranging from 17 kg to 117 kg), and circuit counts are defined in the series specification tables based on nominal pipe size and voltage selection.

Key Product Differences

Variants within the CHF Series differ primarily by watt density rating, which dictates sheath material and suitable media. The 8 watts/in² (1.3 watts/cm²) configuration is designated for fuel oils such as Bunker C and Number 6, utilizing Incoloy® 800, Low Carbon Steel, or Copper sheaths. Conversely, the 60 watts/in² (9.3 watts/cm²) configuration supports deionized and demineralized water applications with standard 316 Stainless Steel sheath elements.

Physical variations include nominal pipe sizes from 2½ NPT up to larger flanged units, corresponding to different dimensional drawings (e.g., Drawing 2.1 through 4.4). Terminal housing options allow selection between General Purpose (NEMA 1), Moisture Resistant (NEMA 4), Explosion Resistant (NEMA 7), or combined ratings without altering the core heating element configuration.
