Supported Applications
The Omega N Type Thermocouple Duplex Wire series provides extension and connection solutions for temperature measurement systems utilizing OMEGALLOY® OMEGA-P® (Nicrosil) and OMEGA-N® (Nisil) conductors. The duplex insulated wire is designed to extend thermocouples from the sensor junction to instrumentation, maintaining Type N signal integrity across a range of insulation types including Ceramic, Silica, High Temp Glass, standard Glass Braid/Wrap, PFA Glass, and PFA Neoflon.
Applications span environments requiring high-temperature stability up to 1090°C (2000°F) with ceramic or silica insulation, down to general-purpose industrial settings using glass braid or fluoropolymer jackets. The series also includes fine diameter bare wire options for specialized sensor construction and assembly.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The performance envelope of the N Type Thermocouple Duplex Wire is defined by insulation material, with maximum operating temperatures ranging from 1090°C (2000°F) down to 260°C (500°F). The series adheres to ANSI color coding standards: positive wire orange, negative wire red, and overall jacket brown. Specific temperature limits per insulation type are:
- Ceramic Insulation: Rated for a maximum of 1090°C (2000°F) at AWG 14; rated to 980°C (1800°F) at AWG 20 and 24.
- Silica Insulation: Supports up to 1090°C (2000°F) for AWG 14, and 980°C (1800°F) for AWG 20 and 24.
- High Temp. Glass:** Rated to a maximum of 704°C (1300°F).
- Glass Braid/Wrap: Supports temperatures up to 482°C (900°F). Note that HH Wire features a trace thread in the positive leg, while the negative leg is red with an overall trace thread.
- PFA Glass and PFA Neoflon:** Rated for maximums of 260°C (500°F).
Ceramic insulated variants include color tracers on both the jacket and conductors. The TT-N-30 model features a clear overall color.
Configuration Options
The series offers extensive configurability across insulation types, conductor sizes (AWG), construction styles, and special service options to meet specific installation requirements.
- Insulation Types: Available in Ceramic (Nextel®), Silica, High Temp Glass, standard Glass Braid/Wrap, PFA with glass braid outer jacket, and PFA Neoflon.
- American Wire Gauge (AWG): Offered in sizes 14, 20, 24, and 30. Fine diameter bare wire is available in diameters from 0.076 mm (0.003 inch) to 0.81 mm (0.032 inch).
- Conductor Construction: Options include solid conductors or stranded configurations (e.g., 7 x 24, 7 x 28, 7 x 32). Stranded variants are denoted by an "S" suffix in the model number.
- Overbraiding:** Available with Inconel® 600, 304 SS, or tinned copper for added durability and abrasion protection.
- Special Limits of Error (SLE):** To order wire meeting special limits of error specifications, add the "-SLE" suffix to the model number before specifying spool length.
- Packaging:** Supplied on various spool lengths including 7.5 m/25', 15 m/50', 30 m/100', 60 m/200', 150 m/500', and 300 m/1000'. Longer lengths are available upon consultation.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between insulated duplex wire for extension purposes and fine diameter bare wire for sensor fabrication. Model numbers follow a structured format: <Insulation> - <AWG No.> - <Model Number> (e.g., XC-N-14, XS-N-20, HH-N-24). For fine diameter bare wire, the format is <Material> - <Wire Dia. mm (inch)> - <Model Number>.
Key variations include:
- Ceramic vs. Silica:** Both support high-temperature ranges up to 1090°C, but differ in physical dimensions and weight per spool.
- Solid vs. Stranded:** Solid conductors are standard for most insulation types; stranded options (e.g., GG-N-24S) provide flexibility where required.
- Bare Wire Materials: Fine diameter bare wire is offered separately as OMEGA-P® Nicrosil or OMEGA-N® Nisil, with model numbers such as SPOP-003-50 and SPON-005-50 respectively.
- PFA Variants:** PFA Glass (TG) utilizes a glass braid outer jacket over the PFA insulation, whereas PFA Neoflon (TT) uses an all-PFA construction for lower temperature applications up to 260°C.
