Supported Applications

The OS130A-Series brings together two families of miniature non-contact infrared temperature sensor/transmitters from Omega — the OS136A and OS137A series. Both determine the temperature of a surface from the infrared radiation it emits, which allows measurement of targets that a contact probe cannot reach, including moving, hot or hard-to-access objects.

Because each unit provides a continuously transmitted signal rather than a simple local reading, these sensors are designed to be built into monitoring and control loops. Selectable output types — 4 to 20 mA, 0 to 5 Vdc, 0 to 10 Vdc, a Type K thermocouple output, 10 mV/°C and 10 mV/°F — let the sensor feed PLCs, data loggers, panel meters and controllers.

The stainless steel construction and NEMA 4 (IP66) and NEMA 4 (IP65) enclosure ratings suit installation in industrial environments. For elevated ambient locations, optional water/air cool jackets (OS136-WC, OS137-WC) and air purge collars (OS100-AP, OS137-AP) widen the conditions in which the sensor head can be mounted, and laser sighting accessories (OS100-LS, OS137-LS) assist with aiming the sensor at the target.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Ambient and environmental limits

Without cooling, the sensor operates in ambient temperatures of 0 to 70°C (32 to 158°F). Fitted with the water/air cool jacket, the usable ambient range extends to 0 to 200°C (32 to 392°F) with water cooling and 0 to 110°C (32 to 230°F) with air cooling. Operating relative humidity is less than 95% RH, non-condensing.

To preserve accuracy after installation, allow the sensor to stabilize following a change in ambient conditions — about 30 minutes for a 25°C abrupt ambient temperature change.

Measurement ranges

The OS136A series covers two temperature-range options: -18 to 202°C (0 to 400°F) and 149 to 538°C (300 to 1000°F). The OS137A series offers three ranges: 0 to 100°C (32 to 212°F), -18 to 260°C (0 to 500°F) and -18 to 538°C (0 to 1000°F).

Accuracy, repeatability and response

OS136A accuracy at 22°C (72°F) ambient is 3% of rdg or 4.4°C (8°F), whichever is greater on the low range; the high range is 3% of rdg or 5.5°C (10°F), whichever is greater from 185 to 510°C (365 to 950°F). OS137A accuracy is 3% of Rdg or 4.4°C (8°F), whichever is greater on its 0 to 100°C (32 to 212°F) and -18 to 260°C (0 to 500°F) ranges, and 3% of Rdg or 5.5°C (10°F), whichever is greater on the -18 to 538°C (0 to 1000°F) range.

Repeatability is 1% of rdg for the OS136A series and 1% rdg or 2°F (1°C) for the OS137A series. Both series share a response time of 150 msec, 0 to 63% of final value.

Optical performance

The OS136A series has a 6:1 optical field of view (6 to 1 distance to spot size), a spectral response of 5 to 14 microns and emissivity fixed at 0.95. The OS137A series tightens this to a 10:1 field of view with a spectral response of 5.5 to 14 microns and emissivity adjustable from 0.5 to 1.0 via a single turn pot.

Power and electrical loading

All models are powered from 12 to 24 Vdc @ 50 mA and terminate in a 1.8 m (6') shielded cable. Minimum and maximum loading depends on the selected output: the 0 to 5 Vdc output needs a minimum load of 1 kΩ, the 0 to 10 Vdc output a minimum of 2 kΩ, the millivolt outputs a minimum of 10 kΩ, and the Type K thermocouple output a minimum of 100 kΩ. For the 4 to 20 mA output the maximum load is (Power supply - 4) / 20 mA.

Each sensor head measures 19 mm OD x 89 mm L (¾" x 3.5") and weighs 181 g (0.40 lb).

Alarm output on the OS137A series

The OS137A series adds an alarm output — a voltage output with 100 mA drive — whose set point is adjustable from 0 to 100 % via a pot.

Configuration Options

The OS130A-Series divides into two capability tiers built around emissivity handling and optics.

OS136A — fixed emissivity, 6:1 optics

The OS136A series uses an emissivity fixed at 0.95 and a 6:1 optical field of view, with a spectral response of 5 to 14 microns. It is offered in two temperature-range builds selected by a suffix: insert '1' for -18 to 202°C (0 to 400°F) and '2' for 149 to 538°C (300 to 1000°F).

OS137A — adjustable emissivity, 10:1 optics, alarm

The OS137A series steps up to emissivity adjustable from 0.5 to 1.0 set with a single turn pot, a tighter 10:1 field of view, and a spectral response of 5.5 to 14 microns. It also adds a voltage alarm output with 100 mA drive and an adjustable alarm set point. Three temperature-range builds are available: insert '1' for 0 to 100°C (32 to 212°F), '2' for -18 to 260°C (0 to 500°F) and '3' for -18 to 538°C (0 to 1000°F).

Both series are housed in stainless steel and carry NEMA 4 enclosure ratings — NEMA 4 (IP66) and NEMA 4 (IP65) — and both can be fitted with water or air cooling to raise the permissible ambient temperature.

Key Product Differences

Every model shares the same sensor platform and differs by series, temperature range and output type. The output type is set by the model suffix.

Output options

  • -MA — 4 to 20 mA output
  • -V1 — the lower voltage-output build
  • -V2 — the higher voltage-output build

The two voltage suffixes correspond to the 0 to 5 Vdc and 0 to 10 Vdc outputs described above.

OS136A models

The OS136A ordering codes are OS136A-(*)-K, OS136A-(*)-MV-F, OS136A-(*)-MV-C, OS136A-(*)-MA, OS136A-(*)-V1 and OS136A-(*)-V2, where the '*' is replaced by the temperature-range digit. Configured examples include OS136A-1-K, OS136A-1-MA, OS136A-2-V1 and OS136A-2-V2.

OS137A models

The OS137A ordering codes are OS137A-(*)-K, OS137A-(*)-MV-F, OS137A-(*)-MV-C, OS137A-(*)-MA, OS137A-(*)-V1 and OS137A-(*)-V2. Configured examples include OS137A-1-K, OS137A-2-MA, OS137A-3-V1 and OS137A-3-V2.

Accessories and options

Optional accessories include mounting brackets (OS100-MB, OS137-MB), air purge collars (OS100-AP, OS137-AP), water/air cool jackets (OS136-WC, OS137-WC) and laser sighting (OS100-LS, OS137-LS). Cabling options include the TX4W-50 4-conductor shielded high-temp cable and the TX4-100 4-conductor shielded cable. Regulated power supplies PSR-24S, PSR-24L and PSR-24L-230, together with the unregulated PSU-93, complete the range.

Optional certifications include NIST traceability and a 1 year warranty, and the products carry the CE mark.
