Supported Applications
The Omega UMR14 Series is a medium-range ultrasonic level/distance transmitter-switch designed for non-contact distance measurement in tough industrial environments. As part of the broader U-Series family, these sensors measure liquid or solid levels and proximity without physical contact with the target material.
- Ultrasonic non-contact distance measurement (level, proximity, dimensioning)
Operating Conditions & Performance
The UMR14 model provides a maximum range of 14 ft. (4.3 m) with a minimum deadband of 4 in. (10.2 cm). The optimum operating range is specified as 4 in. (10.2 cm) to 10 ft (3m), particularly for small targets, dry materials, or hot conditions.
- Accuracy: Better than 0.5% of target distance in stable, homogeneous air environment; affected by temperature gradients, target echo strength, speed of sound in air or vapors
- Repeatability: Greater of +/-0.03 in. (0.76 mm) or 0.25% of target distance in stable environment
- Ambient Temperature: -40 to +158 F (-40 to +70 C), temperature compensated by internal sensor or external Reference Target
- Humidity: 0-100% (avoid heavy condensation)
- Ingress Protection: IP-68, NEMA-4X
- Measurement Rate: Default 50 msec (20 Hz); adjustable from 5 msec to 2.8 hours; faster rates limit max target distance and are affected by filter selections
Analog Resolution & Output Load
The analog output resolution provides 4100 steps over 0-10 VDC and 3279 steps over 0-20 mA, scaled between user-set distance endpoints. Serial data resolution is 0.0034 in. (0.086 mm). Current loop load resistance limits are 450 Ohm max @ >15VDC or 250 Ohm max @ 10 VDC; maximum loop resistance is 500 Ohm @ 24 VDC sensor input voltage.
Configuration Options
The UMR14 Series supports multiple simultaneous outputs configurable via OmegaVIEW PC software or a rear TEACH pushbutton (except on serial-only models). The series offers full-featured configurations with two selectable outputs, including solid-state switches and analog signals.
Housing & Mounting
- Material: 316 Stainless steel housing for UMR14 sensors
- Mount Options: m30x1.5 metric thread or 1-in NPT thread (part number suffixes -30MM and -1NPT)
- Dimensions: 1.2 in. (30.4mm) dia x 4.064 in. (103mm) length
Electrical & Communication Interfaces
- Power Supply: 10-30 VDC @ 55 mA max; typical 45 mA @ 24VDC input +I/O; serial-only models draw typical 35 mA @ 24VDC
- Analog Outputs (OmegaVIEW selectable):
- 0-10 VDC voltage (or custom, OmegaVIEW configured), 10 mA max; requires min 15 VDC input for full 10 VDC output
- 4-20 mA sourcing current loop (or OmegaVIEW configured 0-20 mA custom)
- Solid State Switches: 150 mA, PNP (@ input voltage) or NPN (external 40 VDC max.), configurable as setpoint mode or window mode
- Serial Interface Options:
- RS-232 (PC COM port)
- RS-485: 2-wire multi-drop addressable (addresses 1-247), Baud rates 9600 - 115200, none or even parity, 8 bits, one stop bit
- Cabling: Embedded 6.5-ft (2m) shielded PUR cable with tinned ends; 6-wire for full outputs, 4-wire for serial-only models. M12 connector on 18 in. cable available.
Configuration & Accessories
Sensors are configured using OmegaVIEW software (free download) or the TEACH pushbutton. PC interface kits include KIT-USB-232 and KIT-USB-485 with converter, terminal block, power supply, and data cable. Mounting accessories include MB30-SS90 stainless steel 90-degree mounting bracket and NUT30-SS316 one pair (SS316) stainless steel m30x1.5 nuts.
Key Product Differences
The UMR14 Series is distinguished within the Omega U-Series by its specific range envelope of 14 ft. (4.3 m). While other series members offer different ranges—USR03 at 3 ft, ULR30 at 30 ft, and UXLR50 at 50 ft—the UMR14 maintains a transducer frequency of 120 kHz with a nominal beam width of ~12 degrees @ -3 dB.
- Model Number Structure: [PRODUCT]-[MOUNT]-[SERIAL INTERFACE]. For example, UMR14-1NPT-232 indicates the 14 ft range sensor with 1-in NPT thread and RS-232 interface; UMR14-30MM-485 indicates m30x1.5 metric mount with RS-485.
- Output Configuration: Full-output models provide two outputs selectable via OmegaVIEW (voltage, current loop, or switches). Serial-only versions are available but lack analog/switch outputs on the embedded cable wires designated for those functions.
Note: Output selection is made before connecting to equipment and is not affected by a TEACH 17 reset. A power supply voltage between 15-30 VDC is recommended; target sensitivity and maximum voltage output value are reduced at voltages below 15 VDC.

Great sensor in R&D
This sensor is used in automotive R&D for vehicle-to-target measurement. Omegaview software is easy to use and calibrate the sensor how you want. We are using sensors analog output, 0-10 volt range.

I want to know more about the beam shape and size of the transducer. But I have not seen anything in the documentation
Thank you for your inquiry about the ultrasonic sensor. Yes, the beam width is 12 degrees in conical shape and the transducers vary in size. Click on the Manual tab and you will find general dimensions of the different sensors available.
