Supported Applications
The Omega HGST series consists of low-noise, standard-size thermocouple connectors designed for the easy connection of ground wires to OMEGA® probes and extension wires. These Type HGST Liquid Crystal Polymer connectors are engineered to protect against electrical noise errors and prevent signal loss caused by vibration or wire movement.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series is rated for an ambient operating temperature of -29 to 260°C (-20 to 500°F). The housing material is Liquid Crystal Polymer (Cadmium-Free), providing a durable shell. Electrical connection features include a connector ground that protects against electrical noise errors and maintains contact through the use of internal hardware.
Key performance characteristics documented for the series include:
- Noise Protection: Connector ground design mitigates electrical noise errors.
- Vibration Resistance: Connection mechanism prevents signal loss due to vibration or wire movement.
- Wire Capacity: Accepts stranded or solid wire up to Size 14 AWG.
Configuration Options
The HGST series is configurable across multiple thermocouple types, connector genders, and optional accessories. The model number format follows the pattern HGST--, where the alloy code corresponds to specific compensating alloys.
Thermocouple Types & Compensating Alloys
The series supports the following thermocouple types with corresponding shell colors and compensating alloys:
- Type K (Yellow): CHROMEGA®-ALOMEGA®; uses CHROMEGA® (+) and ALOMEGA® (-).
- Type T (Blue): Copper-Constantan; uses Copper (+) and Constantan (-).
- Type J (Black): Iron-Constantan; uses Iron (+) and Constantan (-).
- Type E (Purple): CHROMEGA®-Constantan; uses CHROMEGA® (+) and Constantan (-).
- Type R/S (Green): Pt/13%Rh-Pt; uses Copper (+) and RNX/SNX (-).
- Type U (White): Uncompensated; uses Copper for both (+) and (-). Type U connectors are used with type B thermocouples (Pt/6%Rh-Pt/30%Rh).
- Type N (Orange): OMEGALLOY®; uses OMEGA-P® (+) and OMEGA-N® (-).
Connector Configuration & Accessories
Variants are available as male connectors with solid pins only or female connectors. Additional options include:
- HCP-L: Write-on window for the HGST connector face.
- HCP-HGST: Write-on window for the HGST connector side.
- GS-GST: Ground straps included for additional mechanical rigidity and electrical contact.
The drain wire of 20 AWG twisted shield cable or the shield of overbraided wire is crimped and held in place by HGST's internal hardware. The series also supports Model SPRTX Built-in 4 to 20 mA transmitter and Model PCLM-FT Cable Clamp with Ferrite Core for EMI Protection (sold separately).
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction within the HGST series is the thermocouple type, which dictates the compensating alloy used in the connector terminals. The shell color varies by type to match standard identification codes: Yellow for K, Blue for T, Black for J, Purple for E, Green for R/S, White for U, and Orange for N.
Connectors are offered as either male (solid pin only) or female configurations. Type HGST connectors include a ground strap to maintain electrical contact through the connector. The series is covered by U.S. and International Patents with pending applications.
