Supported Applications
The Dwyer Lin-E-Aire® series comprises pneumatic spring-and-diaphragm valve actuators designed for the automatic operation of control valves. These units facilitate the opening, closing, or throttling of a valve plug by varying air pressure transmitted from an external control device managing process variables such as pressure, liquid level, temperature, or flow.
Actuators are available in two functional types based on failure mode:
- Air-to-Lower: Termination Nos. 220 through 223 and 240 through 244; the push rod moves to the extreme upward position upon air failure.
- Air-to-Raise: Termination Nos. 230, 231, 233, and 250 through 254; the push rod moves to the extreme downward position upon air failure.
While primarily paired with W.E. Anderson Hi-Flow control valves, Lin-E-Aire actuators can also stroke other brand valves, including butterfly or sanitary globe valves, where a 3 to 15 psi control signal is required.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series operates within an ambient temperature range of -32 to 150°F (-36 to 66°C). The standard diaphragm operating pressure range is generally 3 to 15 psi (20 to 100 kPa), with special ranges available via Option Z for 2-10 psi or 10-18 psi.
Maximum air supply pressures and strokes vary by termination number as documented in the specification tables:
- Air-to-Lower (Standard): Termination Nos. 220, 240 support up to 100 psig (700 kPa) with a maximum stroke of 1 inch (25.4 mm).
- Air-to-Lower (Senior/High Force): Termination No. 223 supports up to 50 psig (350 kPa); Termination Nos. 222, 242 support up to 100 psig (700 kPa) with a maximum stroke of 1-1/2 inches (38.1 mm).
- Air-to-Raise: Termination No. 254 supports up to 70 psig (480 kPa) with a maximum stroke of 2-1/4 inches (57.2 mm); other Air-to-Raise models support pressures from 50 to 100 psig.
Effective diaphragm areas range from 20 in² to 80 in² depending on the actuator size and termination number selected.

- Push Rod & Adjusting Screw: Plated cold rolled or plated steel.
Configuration Options
The Lin-E-Aire series supports a broad configuration envelope defined by the model number guide: [Configuration][Valve Body Action][Connection Size][Valve Seat][Valve Plug Type][Valve Body Material][Trim Material]-[Actuator][Needle Plug Port Size]-[Options].
Process Connections & Valve Bodies
Valve body connection sizes range from 1/2˝ to 2˝ NPT or 1-1/2˝ to 4˝ flange. Available materials include ductile iron, bronze, and 316 SS.
- Configuration: 2-way (code 2) or 3-way (code 3).
- Valve Seat: Single seat for 2-way only; Double seat for 3-way only.
- Plug Types: Linear, Equal percentage, and needle variants available depending on model size.
Housing & Mounting Options
The series offers specific flange options to match pressure ratings:
- Option LRF (Low Range Flange): Class 125 in iron or class 150 bronze, with a 316 SS body. Available for 1-1/2˝ and 2˝ sizes; standard on 2-1/2˝, 3˝, and 4˝ sizes.
- Option HRF (High Range Flange): Class 250 in iron or class 300 bronze, with a 316 SS body. Available for 1-1/2˝ to 4˝ sizes.
Control & Accessories
- Positioner Option (A): W.E. Anderson valve positioners, Catalog Number 100N or 165, can be factory mounted for precise control of valve plug position or sequenced operation.
- Reduced Port Options: L0 reduces port size to 3/4˝ to 1/2˝ (for model 2001) or 1˝ to 1/2˝ (for model 2002); L1 reduces port to 1˝ to 3/4˝ (model 2002 only).
- Special Operating Range: Option Z provides ranges of 2-10 psi or 10-18 psi.
Key Product Differences
The series distinguishes between Air-to-Lower and Air-to-Raise actuation logic, which dictates the push rod position during air failure. Actuator sizes are further differentiated by effective area (20 in², 45 in², or 80 in²) and maximum stroke capabilities.
Termination numbers define these variations:
- Air-to-Lower: Includes Standard actuators (e.g., Term. No. 220 with 20 in² area, 1 inch max stroke) and Senior actuators (e.g., Term. No. 223 with 80 in² area).
- Air-to-Raise: Includes Standard actuators (e.g., Term. No. 230 with 20 in² area, 1 inch max stroke) and Senior actuators (e.g., Term. No. 233 with 80 in² area).
Valve body configurations vary by connection size code: codes 0 through 5 denote NPT sizes from 1/2˝ to 2˝, while codes 6 through 8 denote flange connections for 2-1/2˝, 3˝, and 4˝ respectively. Needle plug port sizes are selectable via digits 2 through 9 depending on the valve plug type (N or L).
