The Omega EXGG-KX-WIRE series provides extension grade thermocouple wires designed for Chromel/Alumel (Type KX), Constantan (Type EX), and Copper/Alloy#11 (Type RX/SX) thermocouples. These duplex wires are specified to extend the signal from a thermocouple sensor to an instrument or controller while maintaining electrical compatibility with the sensing element.
ANSI color codes are applied for each type as documented in the series specifications. The product overview notes that IEC color code options are available via omega.com, distinct from the standard ANSI coding provided on these models.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The maximum operating temperature is defined by the insulation material and wire construction, with a note stating: "Maximum temperature is for extension grade wire or insulation, whichever is lower." The series supports three primary thermal envelopes based on insulation type:
- Glass Braid Insulation (EXGG): Rated to 200°C (392°F).
- Neoflon PFA and Neoflon FEP Insulation (EXTT, EXFF): Rated to 200°C (392°F).
- Polyvinyl Insulation (EXPP): Rated to 105°C (221°F).
Nominal dimensions vary by AWG size and insulation type. For example, the EXGG-K-16 model with Glass Braid insulation measures 2.2 x 3.3 mm (0.085 x 0.130 in), while the Polyvinyl-insulated EXPP-K-14 is larger at 3.4 x 7.3 mm (0.134 x 0.288 in). Weight specifications are provided per spool length, such as 9 kg/300m (17 lb/1000') for the EXGG-K-16.

Thermocouple Types & Insulation Materials
- Type KX (Chromel/Alumel): Available with Glass Braid, Neoflon PFA, Polyvinyl, and Neoflon FEP insulation.
- Type EX (Constantan): Offered in Neoflon PFA, Polyvinyl, and Neoflon FEP insulations.
- Type RX/SX (Platinum/Platinum-Rhodium Compensating): Available with Glass Braid, Neoflon PFA, Polyvinyl, and Neoflon FEP insulation.
Conductor Construction & AWG Sizes
The series supports both solid and stranded conductors across a range of American Wire Gauge (AWG) sizes:
- Solid Conductors: Available in 14, 16, 18, 20, and 24 AWG depending on the insulation type.
- Stranded Conductors: Offered for Polyvinyl-insulated models (e.g., EXPP-K-16S with 7 x 24 strands; EXPP-K-20S with 7 x 28 strands).
Spool Lengths & Special Options
Wires are supplied in various spool lengths to accommodate different installation scales. Standard foot-based options include 25', 50', 100', 200', 500', and 1000'. Metric reel options (denoted by "M" suffixes) range from 7.5M to 300M.
To order special limits of error wire, the series documentation specifies adding "-SLE" to the model number before the spool length designation (e.g., EXTT-K-20-SLE).

Is stranded wire less efficent to use then solid wire? Error, voltage drop, etc? We currently use solid but it has been breaking often in screw terminals.
Hey, thank you for your question. In short, no. Stranded wire is no less or more efficient to use in comparison to solid wire. Both wire options are tested and expected to meet the same requirements.

What does SLE (Special Limit of Error) actually mean?

Omega seems to be out of stock of the UL TC KX type wire and I am looking to using the non-UL version. Since it is not UL listed, are there any accompanying documents such as NRTL, VDE, TUV, ETL or other certification?

I need K type extension wire to used for temperature up to 700 F. Can you tell me which one that I can use?
Thank you for your inquiry! None of our K type extension wire is rated for temperatures this high. Thermocouple grade wire with fiberglass insulation can be used instead which will allow for use up to 900F.

I am moving a temperature control box off of an oven to a remote location. The control box uses a PLC to control the temperature process. I will mount this new box about 85 feet from the oven, what is the best type K extension wire I should use?
