Supported Applications
The Omega PX880 Series comprises lightweight industrial pressure transmitters designed for explosion-proof and intrinsically safe operation in hazardous locations. These units are engineered for stable performance in harsh environments, including applications involving corrosive media, gaseous media (air, steam), water, light oils, dense liquids, and motor oil. The series is approved by Factory Mutual (FM) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) for Class 1, 2, 3 Divisions 1 Groups A through G.
The PX880 Series meets NACE standards for offshore applications. Specific configurations address distinct process needs: the standard PX880 model features a threaded connection suitable for general industrial use, while the PX881 variant utilizes a flush diaphragm design intended to prevent media particles from collecting at the sensing element.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series delivers ±0.25% accuracy (±0.2% of calibrated span) with a 4-20 mA output signal and supports a 5:1 pressure range turndown. Operating ambient and process temperatures are rated from -40 to 100°C (-40 to 212°F), matching the storage temperature limits.
Performance specifications include:
- Response Time: 20 ms
- Vibration Rating: 0.1% upper limit for 3 g @ 200 Hz
- Proof Pressure: 200% of the upper range value
- Power Supply: 12 to 48 Vdc (with reverse polarity protection)
- Load Resistance: 600 Ω @ 24 Vdc; maximum load calculated as (supply voltage - 12) x 50
A pressure snubber is required for all PX880 Series transmitters to suppress destructive waterhammer shock waves. Selection of the specific snubber model depends on the media: PS-2G for gaseous media, air, and steam; PS-2E for water and light oils; and PS-2D for dense liquids or motor oil.
Configuration Options
The series offers two primary mechanical configurations with distinct wetted materials and process connections:
- PX880 Model: Features a 1/2-14 NPTF female process connection. Wetted materials include 316 SS (base), 316L SS (diaphragm), silicone fill, and PTFE gasket.
- PX881 Model: Designed for flush mounting with a Weldolet pipe coupling interface. This model requires the PX881-CPL accessory (38.1 mm / 1½" pipe coupling). Wetted materials include 316 SS, Hastelloy "C" diaphragm, silicone fill, and PTFE gasket.
Available pressure ranges span from low differential pressures to high static pressures:
- PX880 Ranges (psig): 0-30 to 0-150 inH2O; 0-6 to 0-15 psig; 0-15 to 0-30 psig; 0-20 to 0-100 psig; 0-60 to 0-300 psig; 0-200 to 0-1000 psig; 0-600 to 0-3000 psig; 0-1000 to 0-5000 psig; and a specialized range of 3 to 15 psig.
- PX881 Ranges (psig): 0-3 to 0-15 psig; 0-6 to 0-30 psig; 0-20 to 0-100 psig; and 0-60 to 0-300 psig.
Recalibration is performed via three screw potentiometers located inside the transmitter head, allowing adjustment to any range between the two listed limits for a specific sensor using a known pressure source. Units are shipped calibrated to their highest specified range.
Key Product Differences
The PX880 and PX881 models differ primarily in process connection geometry and diaphragm material composition, which dictates application suitability:
- PX880 (Threaded Mount): Utilizes a 316L SS diaphragm with a standard ½" NPT female threaded connection. This configuration is suited for general industrial pressure monitoring where flush mounting is not required.
- PX881 (Flush Mount): Employs a Hastelloy "C" diaphragm and requires the separate PX881-CPL coupling accessory to achieve a flush mount against process media. This design prevents particle accumulation at the sensing element, making it distinct from the standard threaded model.
Both models share identical electronic performance characteristics, including 4-20 mA output, ±0.25% accuracy class, and NEMA 4 enclosure ratings (PX881 dimensions: 80.5 mm height x 224 mm length x 48.3 mm width; PX880 dimensions: 80.5 mm height x 196.9 mm length x 160.3 mm width). The series weight is approximately 725 g (1.6 lb).
