Supported Applications
The Omega OM-ES-500 Series Industrial Ethernet to Serial Device Servers convert serial data (RS232, RS422/485) to Ethernet for networked industrial applications. Designed for harsh factory floor environments, these devices enable serial port tunneling over any distance without software changes, effectively replacing long cable runs with standard Ethernet infrastructure.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The series operates within an ambient temperature range of -30 to 80°C (-22 to 176°F) and supports storage temperatures from -40 to 85°C (-40 to 185°F). Units function in environments with 5 to 95% RH (non-condensing) humidity. The enclosure is rated NEMA 1 (IP-30), constructed of non-conducting polyamide, and features integrated DIN rail mounting.
Performance specifications include a guaranteed minimum throughput of 95% of theoretical bi-directional full-duplex bandwidth at 1 MBaud. Ethernet connectivity supports 10/100 Mbps with auto-sensing (Auto-MDIX) for normal or crossover cabling. Power consumption is typically 1.4 watt (60 mA @24V), with a maximum of 2.9 watt.
Serial Port Capabilities
- Baud Rate: Any custom rate between 60 to 1,000,000 (1 MegaBaud).
- Data Bits: 5, 6, 7 or 8.
- Parity: Odd, even, none, mark or space.
- Stop Bits: 1, 1.5 or 2.
- Flow Control: XON/XOFF software handshake or RTS/CTS hardware handshake.
Ethernet & Protocol Support
The devices support ICMP, IP, TCP, UDP, DHCP, BOOTP, Telnet, HTTP, and RFC2217. Configuration is available via Windows operating system software or a Web Interface. OS compatibility includes Windows 2000, XP, Vista®, 7, 8, and Windows Server®.
RS485 Bus Specifications
The RS485 standard allows up to 32 driver/receiver pairs on a standard load or 128 low-load devices per port. Receivers are specified as 1/8th load, allowing up to 256 nodes on the bus with fail-safe open circuit and short-circuit protection.
Configuration Options
The series is offered in two primary configurations distinguished by serial port count:
- OM-ES-511: Industrial Ethernet to Serial Device Server with 1 port (RS232/RS422/RS485).
- OM-ES-522: Industrial Ethernet to Serial Device Server with 2 ports (RS232/RS422/RS485).
All models feature software-selectable protocols for each port: RS232, RS422/485 Full Duplex, or RS485 Half Duplex. Electrical connections utilize removable screw terminal blocks with a 3.5 mm pitch.
Power & Wiring
The series supports redundant DC dual power inputs (reverse polarity protected) ranging from +5V to +30 Vdc. Conductor wire support is specified for 28 to 16 AWG, with a maximum diameter of 0.14 to 1.5 mm (0.005 to 0.059").
Physical Dimensions & Mounting
The unit dimensions are 114.5 L x 22.6 W x 99 mm H (4.5 x 0.89 x 3.9") with a weight of 21 g (0.74 oz). The housing includes an integrated DIN rail mount and ventilation features.
Key Product Differences
The primary distinction between the OM-ES-511 and OM-ES-522 is the number of serial ports available: one port for the -511 model versus two ports for the -522 model. Both models share identical environmental ratings, power specifications, Ethernet performance, and protocol support.
Optional accessories include 35 mm DIN rails in 1 m (RAIL-35-1) or 2 m (RAIL-35-2) lengths, and a switching power supply (iDRN-PS-1000) with 95 to 240 Vac input providing 24 Vdc output @ 850 mA.
LED indicators provide status feedback for device readiness, IP querying, hard reset actions, initialization diagnostics, and data RX/TX activity on both serial and network ports. A reset button is accessible via an unfolded paperclip.
