Supported Applications

The HOBO MX2201 and MX2202 are waterproof pendant data loggers that deliver measurements to iOS or Android mobile devices over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). The MX2201 is a temperature-only logger, while the MX2202 adds a light-intensity sensor. Both can also be reached remotely through Onset's cloud-based HOBOlink software when used with the MX Gateway.

Temperature monitoring in air or water, with a waterproof housing rated to 30.5 m (100 ft).
Light-intensity studies (MX2202), for example correlating illumination with temperature.
Remote and walk-by data collection, offloading over BLE to a mobile device or via the MX Gateway and HOBOlink.

Setup and offload use the HOBOmobile app, and the loggers are compatible with both air and water media.

Operating Conditions & Performance

Both models share the same temperature sensor:

Range: -20° to 70°C (-4° to 158°F) in air and -20° to 50°C (-4° to 122°F) in water.
Accuracy: ±0.5°C (±0.9°F) from -20° to 70°C (-4° to 158°F).
Resolution: 0.04°C (0.072°F); drift <0.1°C (0.18°F) per year.
Response time: 17 minutes typical to 90% in air moving 1 m/s, unmounted; 7 minutes typical to 90% in stirred water, unmounted.

The logger radio uses Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Low Energy, Bluetooth 4.0) with a transmission range of up to 30.5 m (100 ft) line-of-sight and radio power of 1 mW (0 dBm). The logging rate is selectable from 1 second to 18 hours, memory holds 96,000 measurements, and the unit is waterproof to 30.5 m (100 ft) with 2g (0.07 oz) positive buoyancy in fresh water. Power comes from a user-replaceable CR2032 3V lithium battery. The polypropylene case with EPDM O-ring measures 3.35 x 5.64 x 1.8 cm (1.32 x 2.22 x 0.69 inches). The loggers carry CE Marking and comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules.

Configuration Options

The two models share an identical temperature sensor, radio, memory, battery, and waterproof housing. The distinction is the second sensor:

MX2201 measures temperature only.
MX2202 adds a light-intensity sensor with a range of 0 to 167,731 lux (15,582 lum/ft2) and accuracy of ±10% typical for direct sunlight.
