Supported Applications

The HOBO MX2501 pH and Temperature Data Logger is designed for long-term monitoring of pH in estuaries, lakes, streams, rivers, and oceans. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), it communicates wirelessly with the free HOBOmobile app on iOS and Android devices, so logger setup, a guided pH calibration process, and data offload are all handled from a phone or tablet.

Because it is an electrochemical sensor, the pH electrode should always be stored in storage solution when not deployed.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The logger reports pH and water temperature, with an mV channel behind the pH measurement:

pH range: 2.00 to 12.00 pH; accuracy ±0.10 pH units within ±10°C of temperature at calibration; resolution 0.01 pH.
mV range: -512 to 512 mV; accuracy ±0.20 mV; resolution 0.02 mV.
Temperature range: -2° to 50°C (28.4° to 122°F); accuracy ±0.2°C (±0.36°F); resolution 0.024°C at 25°C (0.04°F at 77°F).
Response time: 1 minute typical to 90% at constant temperature in stirred water (pH); 7 minutes typical to 90% in stirred water (temperature).

The logger operating range is -2° to 50°C (28.4° to 122°F), non-freezing, and the housing carries an IP68 rating. Buoyancy is 13.6 g (0.48 oz) negative in fresh water and 19.6 g (0.69 oz) negative in salt water. Power comes from one AA 1.5 Volt, user-replaceable battery. The PVC-housed logger measures 22.86 x 4.27 cm (9.0 x 1.68 inches), and the CE Marking identifies the product as complying with all relevant directives in the European Union (EU).

Configuration Options

The MX2501 is offered as a single configuration, so every unit provides the same pH sensor with 2.00 to 12.00 pH range, the same -2° to 50°C (28.4° to 122°F) temperature sensor, the same IP68 housing, and the same BLE communication. There are no capability tiers to choose between; the pH electrode is the field-replaceable, consumable element of the system.
