Supported Applications

The Omega SP-HF-K Series High Temperature Foundry Probes and HPS-HT Series Surface Probes are designed for surface temperature measurement in harsh environments. The SP-HF-K-6 Series is engineered for foundry applications with surface temperatures up to 1260°C (2300°F). The HPS-HT Series provides high-temperature surface probe capabilities using Type K, E, or J thermocouple calibrations.

These probes are intended for use on electrically conductive surfaces. Accurate readings require that the probe tips contact the measurement surface directly.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series supports distinct maximum process temperatures based on the specific model and thermocouple type:

  • SP-HF-K-6 Series: Up to 1260°C (2300°F)
  • HPS-HT Type K: Up to 1100°C (2000°F)
  • HPS-HT Type E: Up to 870°C (1600°F)
  • HPS-HT Type J: Up to 760°C (1400°F)

The SP-HF-K-6 Series features a rugged aluminum housing, type HDX. The probe stem diameter is 12.7 mm (0.50") with an overall length of 762.0 mm (30.0"). This includes a handle section with a 25.4 mm (1.00") diameter and a 133.4 mm (5.25") handle length.

Electrical compatibility is limited to High Temperature Impedance Type K Temperature Readouts. These probes will not work with analog display systems requiring 10 or 15 input impedance.

Configuration Options

The series offers configurable termination options and model families tailored for specific connection requirements:

  • SP-HF-K-6 Series Terminations:
    • Spade lugs (Model SP-HF-K-6.0)
    • OSTW male connector (Model SP-HF-K-6.0-OST-M)
    • OGP male connector (Model SP-HF-K-6.0-OGP-M)
  • HPS-HT Series Configurations:
    • Type K, E, or J thermocouple elements
    • SMPW miniature male connector termination (e.g., HPS-HT-K-12-SMPW-M)
    • Retractable cable design with a 300 mm (12") probe body length and a stretchable cable reaching 1.5 m (5')

The sheath material is specified as thermocouple alloy. Custom assemblies are available through Omega's Custom Engineering.

Key Product Differences

The bundle encompasses two distinct product lines with different physical and electrical characteristics:

  • SP-HF-K-6 Series: A fixed-length handheld probe (762 mm / 30") designed for foundry environments. It utilizes a rugged aluminum handle and offers spade lugs or male connector terminations.
  • HPS-HT Series: Surface probes featuring a retractable cable mechanism. These models are available in Type K, E, and J calibrations with SMPW miniature connectors and have shorter probe body lengths (300 mm / 12") compared to the SP-HF-K-6 overall length.

What is the temperature that the shaft/probe can be exposed to? Is it rated up to 2300F, or can it not withstand as much heat as the tip?
