Supported Applications
The Rotronic HC2 series comprises digital humidity and temperature probes based on AirChip 3000 technology. These sensors are designed for use with the HygroClip 2 generation of ROTRONIC instruments, including hand-held indicators, bench top devices, data loggers, transmitters, and hygrostats. The probes support user-configurable settings via PC software, dew/frost point calculation, calibration, simulator mode, automatic sensor testing, sensor failure modes, and data recording.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The HC2 series measures humidity across a range of 0...100 %RH. Temperature measurement ranges vary by model family: the HC2-Sxx models operate from -50 to 100 °C; the HC2-HKxx, HC2-ICxx, HC2-IMxx, and HC2-IExx families cover -100 to 200 °C*; and the HC2-ICxx-HH model operates from -50 to 120 °C. Standard measuring ranges for analog output are configured as 0...100 %RH = 0...1 V and -40...60 °C = 0...1 V, with dew/frost point selectable via PC software.
Accuracy specifications at 10...30 °C include ±0.8 %RH (±1.2 %RH) / ±0.1 K for the HC2-ICxx-HH and ±1.3 %RH / ±0.15 K for the HC2-S-HEATED variant. The device provides a first measurement value after 1.5 seconds with a measurement interval of 1 second. Power supply requirements are 3.3...5 VDC ± 0% (approx. 4 mA), adjusted at 3.3 VDC; HEATED variants require 3.3 VDC / <35 mA. The load resistance is >10 kΩ, and the protection rating is IP65 (except sensor area).
Configuration Options
The series offers multiple housing materials and filter options depending on the specific model:
- Housing Materials: Polycarbonate (black or white) for HC2-S, HC2-S3, and HC2-S-HH models; Stainless steel DIN 1.4301 for the HC2-SM model.
- Dust Filters: Polyethylene filters with pore sizes of 20 μm (HC2-S) or 40 μm (HC2-S3); MFD fleece filter (HC2-S-HH); Wiremesh filter, 20...25 μm (HC2-SM).
- Sensor Elements: HYGROMER® IN-1 sensor for HC2-S, HC2-S3, and HC2-SM; HYGROMER® HH-1 sensor for HC2-S-HH.
The probes feature a UART serial interface and two 0...1 V linear analog output signals. Digital interface adapters are available for direct connection to a PC or Ethernet network (see separate document E-M-HC2-accessories). Different connectors are offered for stand-alone device use with two analog output signals.
Key Product Differences
The HC2 series includes distinct model families defined by operating temperature ranges and physical construction:
- HC2-Sxx Family: Includes models such as HC2-C04, HC2-C05. These feature polycarbonate housings (black or white) with standard dust filters.
- HC2-HKxx / ICxx / IMxx / IExx Families: Designed for extended temperature ranges of -100 to 200 °C*.
- HC2-ICxx-HH Family: Features the HYGROMER® HH-1 sensor and operates from -50 to 120 °C with an MFD fleece filter.
The HC2 probes are compatible only with the AirChip 3000 generation of ROTRONIC instruments. Configuration and firmware updates require ROTRONIC HW4 software version 2.1.0 or higher (version 3.3.0 or higher for firmware updates). For models with integrated cables, effective flexible cable lengths are specified as 1.85 m (6.10 ft) for 2 m versions and 4.85 m (15.91 ft) for 5 m versions.
