Supported Applications
The Series MTL5541 Galvanic Barrier provides intrinsically safe isolation for communication with Dwyer® transmitters approved for use in hazardous areas. The unit supplies a fully-floating dc supply to energize conventional 2 or 3-wire 4/20mA transmitters located in the hazardous area and repeats the current in another floating circuit to drive a safe-area load.
For HART 2-wire transmitters, the barrier allows bi-directional communication signals superimposed on the 4/20mA loop current. Separately powered current sources, such as 4-wire transmitters, can be connected but will not support HART communication.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series MTL5541 operates within an ambient temperature range of -6 to 140°F (-20 to 60°C) and a storage temperature range of -40 to 176°F (-40 to 80°C). Humidity ratings are specified at 5 to 95% RH. The unit settles to within 10% of its final value within 50 µs, with a transfer accuracy better than 15 µA at 68°F (20°C) and temperature drift less than 0.8µA/°C.
Electrical isolation is rated at 250 V RMS between safe- and hazardous-area terminals, tested at 1500 V RMS minimum; 50 V exists between safe-area circuits and the power supply. The safety description parameters are Vo= 28 V, Io= 93 mA, Po= 651mW, Um= 253 RMS or DC.
Configuration Options
The series is designed for T-section 35mm DIN rail (7.5 or 15mm) mounting to EN 50022 standards and features plug-in signal and power connectors. It accommodates up to 2.5 mm² stranded or single-core terminals.
- Power Supply: Requires 20 to 35 VDC, consuming 51 mA @ 24V with a maximum power dissipation of 0.7 W @ 24 VDC and 1.0 W @ 24 VDC.
- Hazardous Area Input: Signal range is 0 to 24 mA (including over-range) with a transmitter voltage of 16.5 V at 20 mA.
- Safe Area Output: Provides a signal range of 4 to 20 mA; under/over-range output is 0 to 24 mA. Load resistance supports 0 to 360Ω @ 24 mA or 0 to 450Ω @ 20 mA, with a current sink maximum of 600Ω.
- Indicators: Includes a green LED for power indication.
The unit weighs 150 g (5.3 oz) and measures 4-11/32 [110.33] x 4-3/32 [103.98] x 41/64 [16.27] inches [mm]. Agency approvals include FM, UL, ATEX, IECEx, and CE.
Key Product Differences
The Series MTL5541 is available with the model number guide format "MTL5541 - " (example: MTL5541S). An accessory option includes an Aluminum DIN rail 1 m, model A-360.
