Supported Applications

The Series 102 and 1102 Flanged Chamber Type Level Controls are external cage type level switches designed for pressure and vacuum vessels. These self-contained, side-mount units utilize a magnetic plunger and float mechanism to actuate mercury or snap-action switch contacts. The series is engineered for general purpose, weather-resistant, and explosion-proof applications in hazardous locations.

Key application constraints include:

  • Liquid Level Control: Designed for liquids with a minimum specific gravity of 0.60 (Series 102) or 0.40 (Series 1102).
  • Hazardous Locations: Available in NEMA 7, NEMA 9, and NEMA 9A enclosures for Class I, Groups C, D, E, F, and G.
  • Safety Restrictions: Cast iron construction is not for use with lethal or flammable substances (either liquid or gaseous).

Operating Conditions & Performance

The series operates under process temperatures up to 425°F and ambient temperatures up to 212°F. Pressure ratings are available at 300 psig, with an optional rating of 400 psig.

  • Repeatability: ±1/4" (6.4 mm).
  • Minimum Liquid Level Change: 5/8" for water; dimensions vary by specific gravity as defined in the selection table.
  • Enclosure Ratings: NEMA 1, NEMA 2, 3 (Weather Resistant), and explosion-proof options including NEMA 7, NEMA 9, and NEMA 9A. Optional general purpose or explosion-proof enclosures are available with a standard NEMA 4X (IP66) rating.
  • Electrical Ratings: Switch contacts support AC voltages of 120V, 240V, and 440V†, as well as DC 125V and 250V. Current ratings vary by switch type (e.g., Mercury SP-ST: 5A at 120V AC; Snap-Action DP-DT: up to 3A or 10A depending on configuration).

Wetted Materials

The series offers configurable wetted materials based on the specific model and service requirements:

  • Float Chamber (Body): Cast Iron, Steel, or Stainless Steel.
  • Float and Trim: 303 SS, 304 SS, 316 SS, and 430 SS. An option for all 316 SS is available.
  • Gasket: Carbon (body gasket) or Neoprene (cover).

Configuration Options

The Series 102 and 1102 are configurable across construction types, switch actions, and special features to meet specific installation needs.

Construction Types & Enclosures

  • General Purpose (NEMA 1): Type 102G. Heavy gauge steel case finished in charcoal gray with a 3/4" NPT conduit connection rotatable 360°.
  • Weather Resistant (NEMA 2, 3): Type 102W. Features a neoprene gasketed cover and drain hole for outdoor service.
  • Explosion-Proof: Type 102E with cast aluminum enclosures identified by "EV" in the type number (e.g., 102EV) for vapor-proof applications. Rated NEMA 7, 9, and 9A.

Switch Types & Actions

The series supports multiple electrical configurations:

  • Mercury Switch Contacts: Available in SP-ST (Open on level FALL or RISE), SP-DT, and DP-DT arrangements.
  • Snap-Action Contacts: Includes hermetically sealed snap options. Configurations include SP-DT and DP-DT with varying amperage ratings for AC/DC loads.

Special Features

  • Wide Differential (D): Identified by the letter "D" in the type number. Provides approximately double the fixed level change between "on" and "off" switch operation (Single stage only).
  • Semi-Automatic with Manual Reset (RU): Operates automatically on level FALL; manual reset is required on level RISE.

Key Product Differences

The Series 102 and 1102 differ primarily in their minimum specific gravity capability. The Series 102 operates to a minimum specific gravity of 0.60, while the Series 1102 extends this range down to 0.40.

Model Numbering

The model number guide follows the format: Series Code - Construction Type - Switch Type - Material/Specific Gravity Code. For example, a standard configuration is listed as 102-WT-<switch_type>-C-60. Specific examples include:

  • 102-WT-4815-C-60: SPDT mercury switch.
  • 102-WT-7810-C-60: SPDT snap-action switch.

Dimensional Variations

The physical dimensions of the float chamber vary based on specific gravity. For a specific gravity of 1.0, dimension A is 5-1/16" (129 mm) and B is 3/4" (19 mm). At a specific gravity of 0.6, dimension A increases to 5-13/16" (148 mm) and B becomes 1" (25.4 mm).

Installation Notes

All controls must be mounted vertically with the switch mechanism level. The 3/4" NPT conduit connection can be rotated to facilitate wiring alignment. Level adjustment is not available for two-stage models.
