Supported Applications

The Series 862E Explosion-Proof, Heavy-Duty Thermostat is designed for hazardous-location temperature control of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. Its explosion-proof enclosure and corrosion-resistant, die-cast construction make it well suited to demanding industrial environments where flammable gases or combustible dusts may be present.

Typical installations include oil rigs and refineries, petrochemical plants, and grain processing and storage facilities, as well as general HVAC control. The design is CFC and mercury free, carries no exposed copper or brass, and is described as suitable for H2S environments. A bimetal sensing element gives fast, reliable actuation that is unaffected by altitude.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The thermostat operates over a temperature limit of -49 to 176°F (-45 to 80°C) and provides an externally adjustable set point knob with an adjustment range of 36 to 82°F (2 to 28°C). The deadband is 2.5°F (1.5°C).

Switching is handled by an SPDT snap action switch with an electrical rating of 22 A @ 480 VAC (resistive), 1/2 HP @ 125 VAC, and 1 HP @ 250 VAC. Wiring is landed on screw terminals, and the conduit connection is 3/4" female NPT. The unit weighs 2.1 lb (0.95 kg) and is built from precision die-cast components.

The enclosure is rated explosion-proof NEMA 7 & 9, Class I, Divisions 1 and 2, Groups C and D; Class II, Division 1, Groups E, F and G; Class II, Division 2, Groups F and G; Class III; and Class I, Zones 1 and 2, Groups IIA and IIB. The thermostat is compliant with UL and CSA.

The Series 862E is offered as a single model that consolidates its full capability set into one explosion-proof package. Rather than splitting features across multiple part numbers, the design combines an adjustable external set point knob, a bimetal sensing element, and an SPDT snap action switch in one compact, lightweight housing.

Its defining capabilities are the explosion-proof, hazardous-location rating and the heavy-duty electrical rating of 22 A @ 480 VAC resistive, paired with motor-load ratings of 1/2 HP @ 125 VAC and 1 HP @ 250 VAC.
