Supported Applications

The Omega Epoxy Coated Tip Thermocouple series (model TC-PVC) consists of PVC insulated thermocouples with an epoxy sealed junction tip. These sensors are designed for general temperature measurement applications where a flexible, low-cost probe is required.

Catalog documentation also references related specialty probes within the same product family, including:

  • Heavy-Duty Penetration Probe (88313) and Tee-Style Penetration Probes (88311/88312), noted for use in frozen food industry applications or industrial settings requiring penetration.
  • Fine Tip TJ Probe (TJFT72).
  • Low-Profile Penetration Probe (88310) for short depth penetration of soft materials such as rubber.
  • Autoclave Probe (TJ36), indicated for food industry, steam washdown applications, or general heavy duty use.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The TC-PVC epoxy coated tip series has a maximum temperature rating of 105°C (221°F). The sensors utilize thermocouple output with available calibrations in Types J, K, T, or E.

Related probe models within the catalog documentation support higher operating ranges:

  • Type K probes: up to 480°C (900°F).
  • Type E probes: up to 425°C (800°F).
  • Sub-zero temperatures are supported for specific models.

Certain models, including the Heavy-Duty Penetration Probe (88313) and Low-Profile Penetration Probe (88310), meet or exceed special limits of error (SLE) and EN 60584-2: Tolerance Class 1.

Configuration Options

TC-PVC Epoxy Coated Tip Series Configuration

The primary TC-PVC series is supplied with the following standard construction:

  • Sensor Construction: PVC insulated thermocouples with an epoxy sealed junction tip.
  • Wire Type: 24 gage solid polyvinyl rip-cord wire.
  • Cable Length: Standard length is 4.5 m (15') per sensor; other lengths are available upon consultation with the Sales Department.
  • Connector: Subminiature male window connector (write-on-window).

Packaging and Lead Options

Variants include single units or packages of five. Model numbers follow the pattern TC-PVC-(*)-24-180 for singles and 5TC-PVC-(*)-24-180 for packs, where (*) denotes calibration (J, K, T, or E). A stripped leads option is available in 5-packs by adding the suffix "-SE" to the model number.

Related Specialty Probe Options

The catalog documents additional probe configurations with distinct mechanical features:

  • 88310/88311/88312/88313 Series: Feature RSC retractable coiled cables stretching to 1.5 m (5') and various tip styles including penetration, threaded (1/4-20), or T-bar construction.
  • TJFT72 Fine Tip Probe: Features a 1/16" OD sheath with a 0.5 mm (0.020") diameter sensing mass; supplied with 1.8 m (6') PFA insulated wire and an SMPW subminiature male connector.
  • TJ36 Autoclave Probe: Includes a 1.6 mm (0.063") diameter probe section, available in grounded or ungrounded junction configurations with mineral insulated coiled cable.

Key Product Differences

The TC-PVC series is distinguished by its flexible PVC insulation and epoxy-sealed tip, contrasting with the rigid stainless steel sheaths found in the 88310/88311/88312/88313, TJFT72, and TJ36 models. While TC-PVC sensors are supplied as single or multi-pack flexible leads, other series offer specific mechanical advantages:

  • Tip Geometry: The 88310 features a low-profile hypodermic tip; the 88312 offers a threaded tip (1/4-20); and the TJFT72 provides a fine tapering tip.
  • Cable Management: Models 88310, 88311, 88312, and 88313 utilize retractable RSC coiled cables that stretch to 1.5 m (5'), whereas the TC-PVC series uses a fixed-length rip-cord wire.
  • Sheath Material: While TC-PVC relies on PVC insulation, other models in the family use 304 stainless steel sheaths, with Inconel 600 or 316 SS options available for specific probes like the TJFT72 upon consultation.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best available I've used these probes several times ( I bought 20 ) with a thermal mapping experiment and they are holding up well. One epoxy tips has come off, so my only negative is that the tip should have been a bit longer.

What are the operational temperature ratings (+/-) for these thermocouples? I don't see this info in your specs/data sheets. Specifically interested in the (-) range.

Asked by: Oscar
Hi Oscar, The epoxy tip TC series has process temperature range -40 to 105C. The limitations derive from the PVC insulation.
