Supported Applications
The Dwyer Series 160E Ellipsoidal Tip Pitot Tube is designed for air velocity and airflow measurement in ducts. These instruments conform to ISO Standard 3966, a specification commonly required in the UK and Europe. The series provides an alternative to hemispherical designs, utilizing a precision-crafted tip configuration that allows air to pass with minimum turbulence.
Applications include laboratory settings where high accuracy is maintained through specific alignment and traverse procedures, as well as general duct traverses for determining average velocity values.
Operating Conditions & Performance
The Series 160E measures air velocities in ranges of 0 to 2600 FPM (feet per minute) or 0 to 13,000 FPM. Accuracy performance varies by application method:
- ±2% accuracy is achievable in laboratory applications when specific conditions are met.
- ±5% accuracy applies when centering the Pitot tube in the duct and multiplying the calculated center velocity by 0.9.
The ellipsoidal tip provides improved accuracy over hemispherical tips when alignment is maintained within 2° of flow orientation. The instruments are constructed from 304 stainless steel (304 SS) wetted materials, suitable for use in corrosive environments with process temperatures up to 1500°F (815°C). Total and static pressure taps measure 1/4" (6 mm) and are permanently silver soldered to the connection block.
Configuration Options
The series is available in multiple insertion lengths, identified by model designations from 160E-00 through 160E-06. Sliding depth indicators grip firmly on the stem to ensure uniform insertion during duct traverses.
Insertion Lengths
- Model 160E-00: 0.2 m (7-7/8" [200.03] overall)
- Model 160E-01: 0.3 m (11-7/8" [301.63] overall)
- Model 160E-02: 0.48 m (18-7/8" [479.43] overall)
- Model 160E-03: 0.8 m (31-1/2" [800.10] overall)
- Model 160E-04: 1.0 m (39-1/2" [1003.30] overall)
- Model 160E-05: 1.22 m (48" [1219.20] overall)
- Model 160E-06: 1.52 m (59-7/8" [1520.83] overall)
Accessories and Options
All Series 160 accessories are compatible with Series 160E units. The A-160-CASE carrying case is available for pitot tubes up to 1.22 m in length.
Key Product Differences
The primary variation within the series is the insertion depth, which determines the overall dimension (Dim A) and model number suffix. The stem diameter is Ø5/16 [7.94] with a 5" [127.00] stem length section noted in dimensional data.
Installation requires a 3/8" (9.5 mm) diameter hole on the side of the duct for insertion to the required depth. The total pressure tap connects to the high-pressure side of a manometer or pressure gage, while the static pressure tap connects to the low-pressure side.
Users should note that while the ellipsoidal tip offers improved accuracy with proper alignment (within 2°), this design is more prone to damage than hemispherical tips and requires extra care during handling. For maximum laboratory accuracy of ±2%, duct diameter must be 4" or larger, readings taken in a smooth straight section minimum 8-1/2 diameters upstream and 1-1/2 diameters downstream, and an egg crate type straightener provided upstream.
