Supported Applications

The Dwyer Series 16B is a dual-loop PID temperature controller designed for process control applications requiring precise regulation of thermocouple, RTD, DC voltage, or DC current inputs. The series supports advanced control modes including ON/OFF, PID, and programmable Ramp/Soak (process) control.

Engineers utilize the Series 16B in systems where dual output configurations are required to manage heating elements, cooling devices, or alarm conditions simultaneously. The controller features RS-485 communication for integration into Modbus ASCII/RTU networks and includes multiple programmable alarm functions for process monitoring.

Operating Conditions & Performance

The Series 16B operates within an ambient temperature range of 32 to 122°F (0 to 50°C) with a front panel rating of IP56. Power requirements are met by AC 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz or optional DC 24V supplies.

Performance specifications include an accuracy of ±0.25% span and ±1 least significant digit across supported input types. The controller accepts a wide range of sensor inputs with specific measurement ranges:

• Thermocouples: K (-328 to 2372°F / -200 to 1300°C), J, T, E, W, R, S, B, L, and U types.
• RTDs: Pt100 (-328 to 1562°F / -200 to 850°C) and JPt100 (-4 to 752°F / -20 to 400°C).
• Analog Inputs: DC voltages (0-5 V, 0-10 V), currents (0-20 mA*, 4-20 mA*), and millivolts (0-650 mV) with a display range of -999 to 9999.

*Note: Current inputs require a 250 Ω precision resistor across input terminals. The controller features dual, 4-digit LED displays showing the Process Value (PV) in red and Set Point (SV) in green.

Configuration Options

The Series 16B offers configurable output combinations to suit specific load requirements:

• Voltage Pulse Output: 14 VDC with a maximum current of 40 mA (Output Code: 2).
• Relay Output: SPDT, rated at 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive load (Output Code: 3).
• Current Output: 4-20 mA DC signal (Output Code: 5).
• Linear Voltage Output: 0-10 VDC, available exclusively for the B series models including Series 16B (Output Code: 6).

The controller supports RS-485 communication using the Modbus ASCII/RTU protocol. Optional accessories include a Mini-Node™ RS-485 to USB converter (MN-1), configuration software (SCD-SW), and weatherproof enclosures (A-900, A-901). For relay outputs driving inductive loads such as contactors or solenoids, an R/C snubber accessory (A-600) is recommended to suppress voltage spikes.

Key Product Differences

The Series 16B distinguishes itself within the broader B-series family by its specific housing dimensions and relay ratings. The physical footprint for the 16B model requires a panel cutout of 45.0 ±0.6 mm (1.77 in) square, with an overall depth of approximately 80.0 mm.

Model variations are defined by their output configuration and power supply:

• Dual Relay Models (e.g., 16B-33): Feature two SPDT relay outputs rated at 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive.
• Mixed Output Models (e.g., 16B-23, 16B-53, 16B-63): Combine a primary analog or pulse output with a secondary relay. For example, the 16B-63 provides a linear voltage output alongside a relay.
• Low Voltage Options (-LV suffix): Models such as 16B-23-LV and 16B-53-LV operate on DC 24V power instead of the standard AC line voltage, while maintaining identical output capabilities.

All Series 16B units carry CE and cULus certifications. The controller does not include an internal power switch or fuse; external disconnects rated for at least 250 VAC are required near the installation point.
